16:56 BST - GOAL! Just after having one chalked off, Spurs break again and this time open the scoring through Brennan Johnson - who scores for a sixth consecutive game.

14:49 BST - There's half-time in both afternoon fixtures, with very little to report in either match.

Neither Villa nor United have really created much in what has been a drab affair thus far.

Down in London, Chelsea are probing but have so far been unable to break down Forest.

14:20 BST - Nothing to report from the opening 20 minutes of either game so far - hopefully things will pick up a bit soon!

14:01 BST - We're underway at Villa Park and Stamford Bridge!

13:45 BST - Both early afternoon games are set to begin in around 15 minutes - stick with us for all the key updates!

12:55 BST - The line-ups are in for this afternoon's two early fixtures, with the main talking point once again centred around Manchester United's defence.

Down in London, Chelsea have kept their front four of Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke, Jadon Sancho and Nicolas Jackson for their clash with Forest.

Saturday, 5th October

20:12 BST - Everton manager Sean Dyche said their point against Newcastle was a "positive" result, despite not being awarded a penalty of their own that could have won the match.

He told Sky Sports: "We have been patching together teams which has been a hard task," he said. "I'm pleased for the back five, I thought they were very good. All things considered we take the point - a positive point - and we have looked strong in the last three games.

"It's back to where we were last season, we were strong defensively. That's really pleasing. Offensive side, we are still finding our feet.

"Jordan (Pickford) has done great and made a good save. And then we don't get (awarded) one. Everyone knows about our record of not getting penalties, and you get frustrated."

20:00 BST - Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been speaking to BBC Match of the Day.

"We created a lot of good chances and I am frustrated we haven't won. But it was much better. It looked like we were snatching at chances. I have to credit the players because it is a difficult environment to play in and it is a much better defensive display from us too. Big steps forward.

"We stood up to the physical test and were technically very good. We are trying to break barriers and have an outstanding season. I think we are capable of more and we have some tough fixtures to come.

"I think Anthony (Gordon) handled the occasion very well. I think his all-round game was very good. He will be disappointed with the penalty. Credit to Jordan Pickford for the save."

19:50 BST - Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been speaking to Sky Sports

"I think we know playing against Newcastle is going to be tough," he said. "The intensity is high. We weren't at our best but we were resilient and we had to dig in. We want three points but to not lose the game is great and our first clean sheet on the board.

"I back myself on penalties and it is the first I have saved for Everton for a while. It is a point and a clean sheet and we build on that."

Remarkably, since the start of last season, only Arsenal (21) and Liverpool (15) have had more clean sheets than Everton (14) in the Premier League.

19:30 BST - Stay with us, we'll bring reaction from Goodison Park as soon as we get it.

19:28 BST - The full-time whistle blows. It ends goalless. How crucial will that penalty be for both Newcastle and Everton come the end of the season? Only time will tell.

Match stats
Match statsOpta by StatsPerform

19:23 BST - Newcastle come charging towards Pickford’s goal once again but Joelinton shoots wide. That's poor. They have yet to hit the target in this second half.

19:14 BST – Oh my. Gordon has just missed a glorious chance. He’s put through on goal, one-on-one with Pickford, and blasts miles over the bar. Clang. It's still 0-0.

19:10 BST - There is 15 minutes of normal time remaining at Goodison Park with both teams coming close. Can either side find a winner?

19:01 BST - How did that stay out? Everton scream for a penalty. Calvin Lewin has a shot at goal that Pope parries, and on the follow-up he appears to be tripped by Burn. The officials aren’t convinced and neither is VAR. Still 0-0.

18:51 BST - It’s been end-to-end so far in this second half as McNeil thumps a shot for Newcastle from 30 yards that goes miles wide, before Bruno has two attempts in quick succession: one goes wide of the post and the other sails over the bar.

18:40 BST - And we're back underway for the second half.

18:22 BST - A cracking first half between Everton and Newcastle comes to an end. Everton had a goal ruled out through VAR before Gordon saw his penalty saved for Newcastle. The big question as the teams walk back down the tunnel: how is this match still 0-0?

Half-time stats

18:04 BST - Tarkowski pulls Tonali to the floor and after a lengthy VAR review a penalty is awarded to Newcastle. Gordon steps up and Pickford saves down to his left! Goodison Park erupts!

17:49 BST - Close! Garner sends a delicious ball into the box and Doucoure thumps home a terrific header for Everton – but the goal is ruled out as he crept offside in the build-up. It's still 0-0.

17:43 BST - Newcastle come close to opening the lead but Ndiaye is on the line for Everton to clear the ball away. Moments later, Lewin breaks free for the Toffees but shoots straight at Pope. It’s been a lively opening at Goodison Park.

17:30 BST - Craig Pawson is the referee today. He peeps his whistle and Everton get us underway.

17:25 BST - For Everton, all eyes will be on Dwight McNeil. The former Burnley striker has scored three of the club’s last five Premier League goals, equalling his tally from last season. Newcastle include Anthony Gordon in their starting XI, who returns to his boyhood club today.

17:07 BST - It's easy to get caught up in all the chaos but we've still got one more game to go this evening as Everton host Newcastle - follow that one live here, and see the team news below:
