Alexander Blockx makes his Shanghai debut against a battle-hardened Quentin Halys in a contest with all the makings of a tight battle

Match News and Form

Quentin Halys has lost more matches than he has won in recent outings, but there was little cause for concern, as his level has remained solid and competitive, leaving him well placed to collect wins whenever the draw offers favourable matchups. That is exactly what happened at the Shanghai Masters this week, as he beat world No. 101 Coleman Wong 6-4, 7-6 to record his 21st win on outdoor hard courts this year, the first time in his career he has passed 20 wins on the surface in a season.

Alexander Blockx has impressed throughout a year of learning, taking on a host of new regions and tournaments for the first time over the past 10 months and adapting quickly enough to win 37 matches across all levels and break into the top 30. The Belgian youngster will be looking to continue that progress on his Asian swing debut, but he fell at the first hurdle in Tokyo last week, losing in straight sets to Valentin Vacherot in a hugely frustrating defeat in which he had chances he could not convert.

Head-to-head: 0-0

Quentin Halys and Alexander Blockx have never met before.

Stats and Facts

Halys suffered second-round exits in both of his previous Shanghai Masters campaigns, in 2023 and 2025.

Halys has made it beyond the second round of a Masters tournament only twice in his career, holding a 2-6 record at this stage.

Blockx is set to make his Shanghai Masters debut.

Blockx has competed in five Masters tournaments this year and made it past the opening round in each of them.

Betting Analysis

This is a really tough one to call. Alexander Blockx has consistently delivered top-30 quality performances and results this year, but his lack of experience in Asia is a concern. Quentin Halys, meanwhile, will not go down easily, having produced some highly competitive performances and regularly pushed top players the distance. This has all the ingredients of a tight battle that could require tiebreaks and even a deciding set.
