Flavio Cobolli hit a physical wall a few months ago after a period of intense, nonstop tennis, and the resulting lack of fitness and energy has been evident in recent weeks. This was clear during his straight-sets loss to Learner Tien in the second round in Beijing last week, where he exposed nine breakpoint chances and was broken five times, going down 3-6, 2-6.

The young Italian shows no intention of taking a break and continues to push on, now making his second appearance at the Shanghai Masters. He was similarly low on energy during his 2024 debut in Shanghai after an intensive season, facing two tough matches, narrowly defeating Stan Wawrinka in a tight contest and being outplayed by Novak Djokovic in the other.

No matter how challenging things may become for Cobolli, this is already a highly successful season for him. He is set up for a strong finish, as he has very few points to defend for the rest of the year, making a finish inside the top 30 in the ATP rankings almost certain.

Jaume Munar’s physical level has also dropped in recent weeks after suffering an injury at the US Open, followed by back-to-back losses in the Davis Cup and Tokyo last week. He was fortunate that his losing streak did not continue at the Shanghai Masters, as his opponent Marton Fucsovics struggled with the conditions and nearly collapsed on court, losing from a set up and giving the Spaniard a much-needed victory.

Munar is now one win away from his best result at the Shanghai Masters, having only reached the second round in his previous visits in 2023 and 2024, where he lost in straight sets to Ben Shelton and Jiri Lehecka, respectively. He enters this match with a 4-8 record in second-round matches at Masters events in his career, with two of those wins coming this year in Miami and Rome.

Head-to-head: 0-0. Neither player is currently at their peak physical condition, and with the demanding conditions expected in Shanghai, much will depend on who can endure longer and stay sharper on court. Flavio Cobolli is the favorite based on his recent form, achievements, and hard-court ability, but factoring in the fitness concerns, Jaume Munar is not completely out of contention.
