Yoshihito Nishioka had been squandering key opportunities during the Asian swing, his familiar region, and failing to salvage much from a difficult season. Fortunately, he has rediscovered some form at the Shanghai Masters, making the most of this final opportunity by winning four matches as a qualifier, including a notable second-round victory over Andrey Rublev.

From riding a nine-match winning streak to suddenly dominating three matches and then taking down a top-20 player like Andrey Rublev, Nishioka’s style is clear: he can go from zero to 100 in an instant. The downside is that he can just as quickly drop back to zero, making consistency and maintaining momentum a major challenge. These four wins have improved his season record to 14-20, though there is still plenty of work ahead.

This marks Nishioka’s career-best result at the Shanghai Masters, and he is now aiming for his first Round of 16 appearance at this level since Cincinnati in 2019. The former Japanese No. 1 has won two titles on the Asian swing before, and replicating that level this campaign to achieve a notable result would help repair his ranking, which has suffered due to a difficult 2025, leaving him currently at No. 173.

Jaume Munar’s strong 2025 season suffered a setback due to an injury during a memorable US Open campaign, which was followed by back-to-back losses at the Davis Cup and Tokyo. He has since bounced back this week, aided in part by a bit of fortune: his first-round opponent, Marton Fucsovics, struggled physically and nearly collapsed, while his second-round opponent, Flavio Cobolli, is currently fatigued.

With this run, the Spaniard has avoided a third consecutive second-round exit at the Shanghai Masters and secured his best result at this tournament, adding to his list of memorable achievements on hard courts in 2025. He has recorded 17 wins in 28 matches on hard courts this year, making this by far his career-best season on the surface, a direct reward for the hard work he put in during the off-season to improve his non-clay game.

The Spaniard recently reached his maiden Round of 16 in a Grand Slam at the US Open a few weeks ago, and he is now just one win away from securing his first Round of 16 result in a hard-court Masters tournament. He previously reached the third round twice, at Indian Wells 2022 and Miami 2025, losing on both occasions to Taylor Fritz and Gael Monfils, respectively.

Head-to-head: Tied 1-1. Jaume Munar has generally been the more consistent and accomplished player compared to Yoshihito Nishioka this year, exceeding expectations with steady results. However, a noticeable dip in Munar’s form and fitness since his US Open setback, combined with the momentum Nishioka has built this week and his familiarity with the conditions, makes this a contest with strong upset potential.
