The 2024/25 campaign
Last year’s Champions League ripped up the group stage format, replacing it with a 36-team, eight-game league phase.
The revolutionary format was designed to pit Europe’s best sides against each other on a more regular basis, and it did that with marquee games like Liverpool facing Real Madrid and PSG taking on Arsenal in a packed schedule that saw 24 teams qualify for the knockout rounds.
That was whittled down until Inter met PSG in last year’s final, played at the Allianz Arena, where the Parisiens were at their scintillating best, thrashing their Italian opponents 5-0 - the largest ever victory in the final’s history.

The 2025/26 format
This year, the league phase remains the same with 144 matches over eight gameweeks. As does the knockout rounds, with those teams who finish between ninth and 24th heading to the playoff round. The winners from that two-legged tie head into the round of 16 alongside the top eight sides from the league phase. From there, they will be whittled down until two remain to contest the final in Budapest’s Puskas Arena on Saturday, 30 May.
