The Ballon d’Or will be handed out on Monday evening at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with Brazil hoping to end an 18-year drought since Kaká last claimed the prize in 2007.
Vinícius Júnior, who missed out controversially to Rodri last year, is once again among the frontrunners. He is joined by Raphinha, the Barcelona forward whose remarkable campaign, 34 goals and 22 assists in 57 appearances, has put him firmly in contention.
Their main rivals include Raphinha’s club teammate Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembélé, a Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain.
England could yet have reason to celebrate, with Alessia Russo among the favourites for the women’s award. The Brazilian great Marta, with Orlando Pride, and Palmeiras striker Amada Gutiérres are also in the mix.
Liverpool’s Alisson is on the shortlist for the Lev Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, while Chelsea’s new arrival Estêvão features among the nominees for the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best U21 player.
