England were beaten by six wickets by New Zealand in the fourth and final T20 at Trent Bridge as the Black Caps fought back to draw the series 2-2.

Moeen Ali took over the reins from England regular captain Jos Buttler, handing the team sheet over with three changes. Brydon Carse, Sam Curran and Rehan Ahmed came in for Buttler, Gus Atkinson and Chris Jordan.

New Zealand’s skipper Tim Southee handed his teamsheet over which showed one change with Rachin Ravindra replacing Devon Conway. Moeen then called correctly at the toss and opted to have a bat.

Jonny Bairstow gave England a fantastic start making a quickfire 73 off 41 balls only for the rest to come to the crease to struggle to find their timing against some accurate and skilful bowling.

Liam Livingstone was next best with 27, but he took an uncharacteristically long time to reach that score - 20 balls. The same went for Dawid Malan who made 26 off 21 balls. The home side finished their 20 overs on an ordinary 175-8.

With the ball, after the wonderful hitting display from Bairstow, the New Zealand bowlers bowled tidily with Mitch Santner in particular keeping things tight with his four overs going for 3-30. Only Kyle Jamieson bowled poorly going for 35 off his two overs, without those runs England’s total would have been well under par.

In the chase, New Zealand‘s openers Finn Allen and Tim Seifert got their side off to the perfect start making 22 of 11 balls before Allen (16) missed a straight one from Luke Wood when trying for a maximum legside and missed.

Daryl Mitchell was in at three, he had the best seat in the house as Seifert at the other end smashed the England attack to all parts in his 48 off 32 balls (2x6-6x4).

With the score on 75-1 off just 6.2 overs Mitchell (14) was excellently run out by Rehan Ahmed/Luke Wood.

Seifert was next to go when he got a leading edge off the impressive wrist spinner Rehan Ahmed (83-3).

Glenn Phillips was in at five, he took no time at all getting into his stride. He found the middle of his bat straightway and began hitting the ball really hard all around the park to the tune of 42 off 25 balls including three massive sixes and two fours.

He finally went when he mistimed a big hit out to Sam Curran at deep midwicket off the bowling of Rehan, but the damage was done and the writing was on the wall with New Zealand at 141-4 off 14 overs.

The hard-hitting from the Black Caps wasn't finished there, as southpaw Matt Chapman took over from where Phillips left off playing a wonderful cameo of 40 off 25 balls to take his side over the line with 16 balls left in the match.

The English attack looked like rabbits in the headlights as the New Zealand batters found their form at the right time. Rehan Ahmed bowled tightly with 2-27 off his four overs.

All five of the other bowlers used by Moeen, including himself, took some pasty.

Player of the match - Mitchell Santner: "We knew the powerplay was the best time to bat. Ish (Sodhi) bowled well and he was backed up by the seamers. The wickets (in this series) have been flat, they have played well, but nothing much has changed throughout the series."

Player of the series Jonny Bairstow: "It's been a while since I have played white-ball cricket, I don't think I have timed the ball that well. I have played run-a-ball and accelerated later.

"That's one of the biggest things I think. You need to catch up, you need to keep that on the back of the mind. You need to run hard and find the gaps if you need to.

"The ankle has been good, hope I continue to be alright as long as I can."
