Three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen has missed out on the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

The world number three lost 10-7 to Australian Damon Heta, with the Dutchman particularly struggling in the finishing and on the doubles.

On Saturday evening, Heta will face last year's finalist Nathan Aspinall or former world champion Rob Cross (both England), who will play out the last quarter-finalist among themselves.

England's James Wade and Josh Rock from Northern Ireland will kick off the last eight on Friday, followed by a clash between Luke Humphries and Gary Anderson.

The only German starter, shooting star Ricardo Pietreczko, failed to make his Grand Slam debut in the group stage.

Defending champion Michael Smith, the world number one and world champion from England, also surprisingly failed to make it through the preliminary round.
