The Players Championship heads to Wigan this week for Players Championship 9. There are some big names ready to get involved in some quality darts action.

The backbone of the PDC calendar, the Players Championship circuit, heads to the north of England this week as Players Championship 9 takes place in Robin Park Tennis Centre, Wigan.

The event will see the current No.1 on the 2026 Players Championship rankings, Wessel Nijman, compete against Premier League of Darts stars Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton to take home the top prize.

Who’s competing at Players Championship 9?

Overall, there are 128 players taking part in the tournament. Current No.1 in the 2026 Players Championship rankings, Wessel Nijman, will be competing against a field of big names. PDC World No.2 Luke Humphries will be taking part, along with his Premier League of Darts compatriots, Gerwyn Price, Jonny Clayton, Josh Rock and Stephen Bunting.

Former World Champions are in Wigan too, with Peter Wright, Michael Smith and Rob Cross all in attendance. Other notable names include Nathan Aspinall, Scott Williams, Ricky Evans, Joe Cullen, Beau Greaves, Chris Dobey and Damon Heta.

Big names who will miss the event include the PDC World No.1 Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, Gian van Veen, Gary Anderson and Ryan Searle.

What is the format? 

Games start as a best of 11 before gradually increasing to best of 13 for the semi-finals and best of 15 for the final.

Ranking Impact

Each Players Championship event has a £15,000 top prize. Nijman heads the table with winnings of £48,000, followed by Dobey in second with £37,500 and Price in third with £32,750.

Nijman will keep his lead as long as he makes it to the quarter-finals, where he can win £4000 - that is, if Dobey wins the whole event.
