Jonny Clayton returned to the summit of the Premier League standings thanks to last week’s scintillating display in Brighton, which propelled him towards a third nightly win. The Welshmen edged past Luke Humphries and Josh Rock, before clinching a 6-5 victory over Michael van Gerwen in the showpiece.
It was a disappointing evening for Luke Littler, who succumbed to a rejuvenated Stephen Bunting in the quarter-finals. The pre-tournament favourite ended the contest with a measly 83.94 three-dart average, the lowest he’s ever recorded in a PDC televised match. A mixture of ironic cheers and jeers was levelled at Littler throughout his shock defeat, which came just a week on from a prickly confrontation with fellow youngster Gian van Veen.
Meanwhile, Michael van Gerwen beat van Veen to set up a semi-final meeting with Stephen Bunting, who is starting to find some form following an extremely underwhelming start to the season. Despite delivering a lower average, the dynamic Dutchman managed to squeeze his way through to the final. Elsewhere, Josh Rock registered an impressive triumph over three-time Grand Slam of Darts winner Gerwyn Price. The Northern Irishman failed to win any of his opening seven ties in his debut Premier League Darts campaign, but will be hoping to make his fourth successive semi-final appearance on Thursday evening.

The story so far
Having failed to progress to the play-offs last time around, Michael van Gerwen celebrated a first Premier League Darts nightly win in almost two years as this season’s competition got underway in Newcastle. The Green Machine thrashed Stephen Bunting and Luke Humphries, before getting the better of Dutch compatriot Gian van Veen – who had earlier prevailed over Luke Littler in a repeat of the previous month’s World Championship final – to kickstart his bid for a record-extending eighth Premier League Darts title.
Although he came close, van Gerwen was unable to make it two from two as Premier League Darts arrived in Antwerp for the very first time. MvG swept aside Josh Rock and Luke Littler before being soundly beaten by Gerwyn Price, who had registered his tenth consecutive triumph over World Cup partner Jonny Clayton en route to the final.
However, Clayton would eventually gain revenge the following week, eliminating Price at the quarter-final stage in Glasgow. The ‘Ferrett’ would then enjoy a five-leg winning margin over a hapless Luke Littler – who had received a bye to the semi-finals following Michael van Gerwen’s withdrawal due to illness – before comprehensively defeating Gian van Veen in the showpiece.
Despite suffering yet another early defeat, Josh Rock was arguably the happiest of all eight players at the conclusion of night five. Performing in front of a partisan home crowd in his native Northern Ireland, Rock struck the first and only nine-darter of this season’s Premier League Darts during the seventh leg of his opening-round loss to Gian van Veen. The Antrim-born archer received a set of gold-encrusted darts worth an eye-watering £30,000 for his achievement, which was the 22nd time a nine-darter had been struck in Premier League history. It was certainly a night for the underdogs at Belfast’s SSE Arena, as lowly-ranked Stephen Bunting navigated past Humphries, Clayton, and van Veen to secure maximum points.
Luke Littler then became the fifth nightly winner in as many weeks, after delivering three polished performances in the Welsh capital. That enabled the gifted teenager to rise from seventh to third in the Premier League rankings, but still five points behind runaway leader Jonny Clayton.
Clayton extended this advantage on Night 6, as he claimed his second victory of the campaign thanks to a determined display in Nottinghamshire. Despite being diagnosed with gout ahead of the evening’s action, the 51-year-old cruised past Michael van Gerwen and Stephen Bunting before thrashing Luke Humphries in the final.
It didn’t take long for Littler to wrestle back the initiative, doing so in dramatic circumstances in Dublin. The reigning world champion survived no less than eight match darts – three against Michael van Gerwen and a further five in his scintillating comeback victory over fellow finalist Gerwyn Price – to land his second nightly win within the space of 14 days.
Having re-established himself as a potential title contender, Littler once again stamped his authority the following week. On an evening which saw Josh Rock progress to the semi-finals for the first time in his fledgling Premier League career, Littler struck two 170 checkouts in his meeting with van Gerwen after comfortably dispatching Stephen Bunting and Gerwyn Price in the earlier rounds.
Few would have bet against Littler continuing his winning streak at the Manchester Arena, but Gian van Veen ruined the Warrington-born superstar’s homecoming in a heated quarter-final tie. The 23-year-old Dutchman looked visibly disgruntled as Littler celebrated his failed match dart attempt, but enjoyed the last laugh thanks to nailing double-six on his next visit to the oche. Although he would later defeat Josh Rock, van Veen had to settle for second place for a fourth time this Premier League season as Gerwyn Price scooped the top prize on Night 9.
Jonny Clayton’s triumph at the Brighton Arena put him three points clear of second-placed Luke Littler, while both players are on the cusp of qualifying for the play-offs. Price and van Gerwen currently occupy the remaining top four slots, leaving Gian van Veen, Stephen Bunting, Luke Humphries, and Josh Rock in the bottom half of the table.
