England captain and Catalans Dragons full-back Sam Tomkins has announced he will retire from rugby league at the end of the season.

The two-time Super League Man of Steel award winner has not appeared for his club this term after undergoing knee surgery in January following the World Cup.

"Unfortunately this is going to be my last season on the field. I can’t do it much longer," Tomkins told Sky Sports.

"This year is going to be a push, I know I can get out there this year and perform, but I am going to be moving into a role off the field next year, still with the Dragons."

"I still love the game, I'm still passionate about the game, I want to play and the rest of my body is saying to continue, but I've got that many issues in my left knee now that I can't go much longer.

"It's been a tough week and the club has been really supportive."

Tomkins started his career in 2016 with Wigan, and embarked on a two-year spell with NRL side New Zealand Warriors before returning to the Lancashire side.

He moved to France to join Catalans in 2019 and help them reach the 2021 Grand Final, where they were beaten by St Helens.

Tomkins retires with three Grand Final victories under his belt as well as two Challenge cups - all of which came with Wigan.

Internationally, Tomkins represented England at the 2013 and 2021 World Cups, although suffered heartbreak at the semi-final stage on both occasions by losing to New Zealand and Samoa respectively.
