AFCON is now fully underway, and after the first matchday, Egypt and South Africa face off to determine who will be top of Group B. Both teams enjoyed 2-1 victories in their first game, with Egypt sneaking past Zimbabwe thanks to a Mohammed Salah injury-time goal, and South Africa scoring a late winning goal of their own to get past Angola.

South Africa will win, or the two will draw
These are the two teams expected to qualify from this group in first and second. Egypt are one of the favourites to win the whole competition, and should have too much for South Africa in this game. Having said that, South Africa have not lost to Egypt in their last five games, including two wins for South Africa this year. Furthermore, South Africa have not lost in their last 12 games this year, so they come into this in fantastic form. I think, despite Egypt being the favourites, South Africa will surprise many and, on form, should win the game. But the strength of Egypt and their star players should always be a fear for their opponents, which is why I am hedging this bet for a draw or South Africa win.

Two or more goals
The stats ring loud and clear for this bet. Five of Egypt’s last six games saw both teams score, with their last seven games seeing two or more goals scored. Of South Africa’s last 15 wins, 12 were accompanied by a two-plus goal margin, with six of their last eight games having two or more goals. The last two games these teams played this year both saw two or more goals. I believe this stat will stick, and we will see two or more goals by these two attacking teams.

As said in the last bet, five of Egypt’s last six games have seen both teams score. Whilst only three of South Africa’s last 13 AFCON finals games saw both teams score, two of the last three games for South Africa have seen both teams score, and the two games South Africa and Egypt have played this year saw both teams score too. With so much on the line and, again, the attacking talent on display from both teams, I expect both teams to score in this game.
