This Bavarian battle started with a ferocious pace, with Luis Diaz somehow failing to tap into the open net with barely 20 seconds gone.
Both sides kept up the momentum from there and chances were missed at both ends, but Serge Gnabry made no mistake to head in the opener from Harry Kane’s cross from the left side.
Bayern only increased their pressure further in search of a second, but Augsburg did well to weather the storm, even enjoying a spell of pressure on the Bayern goal towards the end of the half.
It looked as though the hosts were heading into the break still in with a chance, but Bayern hit again with virtually the last kick of the half. It was a fluid move culminating in Konrad Laimer’s pass in from the right for Diaz to slot home.
That goal had the effect of completely dampening Augsburg’s spirits upon the restart, and they could only survive a matter of minutes before letting in another. Kane flicked it on for Michael Olise, who nonchalantly evaded Keven Schlotterbeck’s challenge and rolled under Dahmen.
But the home side always looked capable of catching their illustrious opponents by surprise, and Kristijan Jakic volleyed in Robin Fellhauer’s cross just five minutes later.
Bayern sensibly sat back to protect their lead, but that didn’t stop Jakic from laying it off for Mert Komur to slot through a crowd and into the corner, setting up a blockbuster final 15 minutes.
Only one side – Kaiserslautern in 1973 – had ever caught Bayern from three goals behind in a Bundesliga match, and Augsburg threw caution to the wind in search of making history, but it wasn’t to be.
Bayern therefore keep the top spot they have held since matchday three last season, and face Hamburg at home next time out – six out of the last seven editions of that fixture have seen at least five Bayern goals.
Augsburg manager Sandro Wagner – who played for Bayern as recently as 2019 – won’t be too disappointed not to get something after such a capable performance against his boyhood club, and will instead be looking ahead to a run of more favourable upcoming matchups.
