Home win

Emery is something of a master of European football, having won the Europa League five times with Sevilla, Villarreal and now Aston Villa.

He knows how to get the best out of his squad in these league phase-knockout phase competitions, so expect Villa to be well prepared for Wednesday’s home date with Viking.

The Norwegians knocked Bodo/Glimt off their perch by winning the Eliteserien title in 2025, and once again it’s those two sides that are battling it out for the championship.

In the Champions League, Viking were downed 1-3 by Stuttgart in their opener before claiming a creditable draw with Bayern Munich.

However, it was one of those games that had to be seen to be believed: the German champions had 51 touches in the Viking box, recorded 25 shots, won a staggering 15 corners and scored three times… only to be pegged back.

So vulnerable are the Norwegians defensively that we simply have to favour an in-form Aston Villa side to take full advantage on home soil.

The stats don’t lie?

Bayern Munich scored three against Viking in their last Champions League outing, and in truth it might have been more.

Stuttgart crafted four big chances against the Norwegians, scoring three of them, so you can probably see where we’re going with our next pick.

Viking have lost their last seven European away games during recent years, while the Villains have scored more than three in each of their last trio of Champions League outings.

You have to go back to September 5 for the last time Villa didn’t score at least once in a game, so backing them to fire 2-4 on Wednesday seems fair value.

Sharp shooting

Aston Villa’s renaissance in form has been powered by their attacking output.

Against Brentford, who they drew 2-2 with, Emery’s side recorded 20 shots from 37 touches in the Bees box. Seven of those were on target.

And at home against Fenerbahce, a fixture akin to this clash with Viking, Villa had 20 shots in all and 11 of them were on target.

Every game is different in football, but Viking should – in theory – face a similar onslaught from the Villains as Brentford and Fenerbahce. 

And as for who should be involved? Nicolas Jackson has scored in both of his UEFA Champions League appearances for Aston Villa against Club Brugge and Fenerbahçe, and has two Premier League goals too, so expect him to be involved.
