That first leg centred around the red card shown to Pau Cubarsi on the brink of half-time.
Barca were the better side and looked far more likely at the time, before Cubarsi departed for his early bath after committing a professional last-man foul.
Julian Alvarez beautifully curled home the resulting free kick, and while Barca continued to press on with 10 men in the second period, Atleti found a second via Alexander Sorloth.
All of which leaves Barcelona with a mountain to climb in the second leg on Tuesday. Can Hansi Flick’s side successfully switch from hunted to hunter in Madrid?

Atletico Madrid team news
Juan Musso was crowned man of the match for his display between the sticks in the first leg, and it’s likely that he will continue to deputise for Jan Oblak in goal.
Diego Simeone would love to name the same starting 11 that won at Camp Nou last week. And he might just do that, although he’ll be sweating on the fitness of David Hancko, who was substituted in the first half of the first leg with a muscle injury. He left Barcelona on crutches.
His replacement, Marc Pubill, is suspended for the second leg, so that could be a selection headache for Simeone to solve.
Atletico Madrid predicted lineup v Barcelona, (4-4-2)
Musso; Molina, Le Normand, Lenglet, Ruggeri; Simeone, Llorente, Koke, Lookman; Alvarez, Griezmann.
Barcelona team news
How does Hansi Flick overturn this 0-2 deficit?
He’ll have to do so without Raphinha, who continues to be absent with injury, while Cubarsi is of course suspended.
Will Flick make any other changes? He might be tempted to give Gavi a start in midfield, but otherwise it will likely be the same attacking quartet that is tasked with overcoming their two-goal obstacle.
Barcelona predicted lineup v Atletico Madrid, (4-2-3-1)
Garcia; Kounde, Martin, Araujo, Cancelo; Gavi, Pedri; Yamal, Olmo, Rashford; Lewandowski.

Head-to-head record
Atletico upset the history books as well as the bookmakers’ odds in the first leg, winning for just the eighth time in their last 48 meetings with Barcelona.
Barca have won 28 of those, with 12 draws, but fans of omens will be keen to hear how many times Barcelona have beaten Atletico Madrid by a margin of two or more goals.
That’s happened twice in their last six meetings in all competitions, but four times since March 2024 – such is the regularity with which these two play each other.
But has it ever happened on Madrid soil? The answer is yes… as recently as March 2025, too. A Ferran Torres brace, plus goals from Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal, guided Barca to a 4-2 victory. A good omen, perhaps?
Odds for Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona
There are two sets of odds to remember for this game: the match result and then the ‘to qualify’ market. As far as this match is concerned, Barca are the 5/6 favourites to win inside 90 minutes. Atletico Madrid are the underdogs at 14/5, with the draw priced at 11/4.
Odds correct at time of writing, subject to change.
