Bodø/Glimt stunningly secured their place in the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) on their main draw debut, as they came from behind to beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano, denying the Spaniards automatic qualification for the last 16.

Atleti hadn’t conceded across their last two games at the Metropolitano, but they came close to falling behind twice inside the opening five minutes here.

First, José María Giménez headed clear off the line after Sondre Brunstad Fet had chipped Jan Oblak, before Kasper Høgh pounced on a poor Koke pass but could only fire over the bar.

Diego Simeone’s men responded in kind, with Alexander Sørloth seeing a header denied by Nikita Haikin, while Álex Baena did find the net with his head, only for his celebrations to be cut short by the offside flag.

The hosts’ pressure continued to intensify, and they got their reward on the quarter-hour mark.

Sørloth wasn’t to be denied a strike against his former club, as he headed home from Dávid Hancko’s cross to mark the fourth time in Atleti’s last seven matches that he’s opened the scoring.

Pablo Barrios and Sørloth came close to doubling their lead, but Haikin’s heroics to deny them paid off when Bodo/Glimt hit back. Fredrik André Bjørkan’s pinpoint square ball found Fredrik Sjøvold in space in a crowded penalty area, and he picked out the bottom corner to restore parity.

The equaliser came against the run of play, and the visitors’ goal continued to live a charmed life until the half-time whistle. Haikin made a superb save to keep out Nico González’s header, while Julián Alvarez headed onto the roof of the net and Pablo Barrios thundered against the crossbar.

Atleti continued to dominate after the restart, but yet more wasteful finishing was punished just before the hour mark.

The hosts simply couldn’t clear the lines in an episode of penalty box pinball, and after Håkon Evjen was denied on three separate occasions, Høgh pounced to stab home at the near post.

Atleti’s response was typical of their performance, with good intent let down by poor finishing, as Sørloth and substitute Thiago Almada were particularly guilty of missing from promising areas.

Simeone’s men ultimately ran out of ideas in their comeback effort, meaning they’ll have to settle for a place as a seeded side in the knockout play-offs after seeing their 13-match winning home run come to an abrupt end.

Bodo/Glimt sit on the other end of the spectrum with this being arguably the greatest night in their history, as a second stunning victory in the space of a week secures their place in the knockout stage.
