Champions League draw: Who could English teams face in the next rounds?

Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle, Tottenham and Chelsea are through to the knockout rounds of the Champions League, but who can they face and when are the draws? Find out everything you need to know below.

After the eighth and final round of matches in the Champions League group stage, we now know which teams have qualified for the round of 16, who faces a two-legged round of 32 play-off, and which clubs are eliminated from Europe altogether.

For the first time, the final league position will determine seeedings for the latter stages. For finishing in the top two, Arsenal and Bayern will play the second legs of all their knockout ties at home, and for finishing third and fourth, Liverpool and Tottenham will play the second legs of their last 16 and quarter-finals at home.

For the knockout round of 32 play-off round, teams from the same federation can be drawn against each other. Clubs can also be drawn against opponents they already met in the league phase.

Top eight clubs through to the round of 16

The top eight sides in the league phase automatically qualify for the round of 16. They are as follows:

Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Tottenham, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting, Man City

Clubs through to the knockout play-off round

Teams that finished ninth to 24th place in the league phase qualify for the knockout play-off round. They are as follows:

Real Madrid, Inter Milan, PSG, Newcastle, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, Leverkusen, Dortmund, Olympiacos, Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Monaco, Qarabag, Bodo/Glimt, Benfica

Clubs eliminated from Europe this season

Teams that finished 25th to 36th are elimated from Europe. They are as follows:

Marseille, Pafos, Union SG, PSV, Athletic Bilbao, Napoli, FC Copenhagen, Ajax, Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, Villarreal, Kairat Almaty

When is the Champions League knockout play-off round draw?

The draw for the knockout play-off round will take place at 11:00 GMT on Friday 30 January at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.

Who could each team face in the knockout play-off round?

Clubs are paired based on their final league position. Clubs who finished 9th to 16th are seeded and paired with unseeded clubs who finished 17th to 24th. Clubs in each seeded pair are then drawn against unseeded clubs in their bracket. It means the draw for the knockout play-off round will be: 

1) Real Madrid or Inter Milan v Bodo/Glimt or Benfica

2) PSG or Newcastle v Monaco or Qarabag

3) Juventus or Atletico Madrid v Club Brugge or Galatasaray

4) Atalanta or Leverkusen v Dortmund or Olympiacos

Dates of the Champions League knockout play-off round

The first legs will take place on Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th February, with the second legs taking place on Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th February.

The eight clubs that win over two legs will take their place in the draw for the round of 16.

When is the Champions League round of 16 draw?

The draw for the round of 16 will be held on Friday 27th February.
