After the conclusion of the league phases across the three European cup competitions, focus turns to the playoff first legs and some mouthwatering ties. As always, we have picked out the must-watch matches from the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League over the coming days.

Tuesday, February 17th

Benfica v Real Madrid - 20:00 GMT

After their dramatic showdown during the league phase finale, in which Jose Mourinho's Benfica came from a goal down to win 4-2 and squeeze through in dramatic fashion, the same sides meet again in the playoffs.

Over the next two legs, expect drama because, whether he likes it or not, it rarely fails to follow Benfica manager Mourinho.

Real Madrid, with their damaged ego and frustration at missing out on the top eight because of their new foes, will be desperate for revenge and to have the final say.

Los Blancos will take some confidence from the fact that they have won all three games in LaLiga since that humbling night in Lisbon, including an impressive 4-1 win at the weekend against Real Sociedad.

Aside from star players Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior (both of whom are likely to play a vital role over the two legs), Real Madrid have a couple of interesting weapons that could cause Benfica trouble.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's first start since early December came against Sociedad, and the attacking full-back returned with a delightful assist for Gonzalo Garcia.

It is Garcia who is the other weapon for Real Madrid that wasn't used against Benfica last time out. Whenever the young striker gets opportunities from the bench or from the start, he has a knack for getting goals.

Benfica, meanwhile, have drawn one and won two of their three games in Liga Portugal since that memorable European night.

Mourinho, therefore, will also be confident his side can pull off another shock win on Tuesday evening. It does feel important they do, though, because if Real have an advantage heading to the Santiago Bernabeu, the tie will feel all but over.

Bodo/Glimit vs Inter - 20:00 GMT

Bodo/Glimt were the story of the league phase. The small club from the Arctic Circle came into the 2025/26 Champions League campaign with low expectations from the media. Before a ball was kicked, few gave them hope of making it beyond the league phase.

Yet here we are.

Bodo finished in 23rd spot after stunning European giants Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in their final two games in the league phase.

It wasn't an easy ride at times, and they did only just squeeze into the playoffs, but to beat the teams they beat against all odds means they richly deserve their playoff spot and an opportunity to deliver another upset against last season's finalists.

Inter will, of course, fancy their chances as they make their trip to the sub-zero conditions in the far north of Norway, but they would be naive to expect victory.

Bodo showed against City and Atletico that they have something about them. They attack with purpose and directness, and they have players with serious quality in the final third.

Inter will, of course, be the big favourites and assuming they don't take Bodo/Glimt lightly, you would fancy them to move on the brink of a last-16 spot with an away victory. After all, they have had a lot of recent success in this competition, and they possess a squad packed with world-class quality.

Cristian Chivu's side have also won all of their past six games in all competitions to extend their lead at the top of Serie A and book their place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

Fenerbahce v Nottingham Forest - 18:45 GMT

Hosts Fenerbahce will be hoping to take their impressive domestic form into Europe when they face Premier League strugglers Nottingham Forest in a fascinating early kick-off during Thursday's Europa League playoffs.

The Turkish giants struggled to win in their league phase, missing out on a top-eight finish. However, four wins from four domestically will give them some confidence heading into this clash in front of their electric home support.

Star player Marco Asensio might well play a big part if the hosts are to win after five goal contributions in his last four games in what is turning into an excellent debut season in Istanbul.

What will give Fener even more comfort is knowing how much their visitors have been struggling in the Premier League this season. Whilst the hosts are in a title race in the Turkish Super Lig, Forest are 17th and very much in a relegation battle.

It is the start of an era for the former European champions, however, after Vitor Pereira was announced as their new manager over the weekend. The former Wolves boss will be hoping to get off to a dream start in Europe in what is a huge first game in charge, before focus turns to Forest's Premier League survival...

Celtic v Stuttgart - 20:00 GMT

When the draw was made for this Europa League playoff tie, Celtic fans wouldn't have held much hope of their side progressing. However, five wins on the spin in all competitions have firmly put them back in contention for the title in Scotland, and they might just fancy their chances a bit more on Thursday evening.

The grey mist that had been hanging over one of the worst seasons in recent memory for the Glasgow giants has finally swept away, and in its place, hope has returned. Celtic are winning games again under new (old) manager Martin O'Neill and looking more like a side that can compete in Europe.

Their opponents, Stuttgart, are also in good form, however. Just one defeat and four wins from their last five games is a sign of a side in a good place and are picking up results in a higher quality league than the Scottish Premiership, it must be said.

The German side also had a much more successful league phase campaign than Celtic, finishing 11th on 15 points, just one point off a top-eight finish.

Celtic finished on 11 points and only squeezed into the playoffs after an unbeaten final two games of the league phase. They come into this clash very much as underdogs, but with a surely deafening Celtic Park behind them and confidence on their side, anything could happen on Thursday night. You won't want to miss it!
