Live updates

23:45 GMT - What an end to the Champions League group stage that was. Congratulations to Man City who came from behind to book their place in the play-offs alongside Celtic, and to Aston Villa, Arsenal and Liverpool for all qualifying for the last 16.

Commiserations to Dinamo Zagreb, who narrowly miss out on a place in the knockouts despite beating AC Milan in their final match.

We'll be back tomorrow to see how Man Utd, Tottenham and Rangers fare as the Europa League group stage draws to a close.

See you then!

23:06 GMT - Amid all the Champions League reaction, Dortmund have confirmed Niko Kovac will take over the club's manager until 2026.

The former Bayern Munich coach will replace Nuri Sahin, who was sacked last week.

Dortmund will face either Club Brugge or Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League play-off round and could come up against Aston Villa in the last 16.

Read more on Kovac's appointment here.

22:59 GMT - Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Amara Nallo will learn from his red card in their defeat at PSV.

The 18-year-old was sent off just four minutes in to his Champions League debut after coming off the bench.

"It was an eventful game.. and I think everyone expected that before," he told TNT Sports.

"It is cruel (for Nallo to be sent off) but he has never played first team football before and to make your debut in the Champions League is probably the hardest.

"He misinterpreted the situation and it's a big moment to learn from. It is cruel when you think I'm making my Champions League debut but you go off a few minutes later.

"A career isn't always positive, it also has negatives and he has to make sure he plays in this competition again."

22:56 GMT - Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has said things are "going well" for the Gunners after qualifying for the last 16.

He told TNT Sports: "Really good at the moment. Things are going well. We won the last four games in the Champions League but winning in this competition is very demanding but overall the team has been very consistent, regardless of all the issues they have had to face.

"Hopefully more belief in that dressing room that we are a good team and can face anyone and still perform and win games."

22:47 GMT - Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his pride in his Celtic team after reaching the play-offs.

Celtic reached the play-offs despite losing 7-1 to Borussia Dortmund in their first away match in the Champions League this season, and are the first side to lose a game by 6+ goals in the group stage but still qualify for the knockouts.

"The word that screams at me is pride," he told TNT Sports. "The game was right in the balance right through to extra-time. We had a really challenging start being two nil down. We started the game well but then we conceded the two goals. Second goal was a brilliant goal. Game was right in the balance until the end. Pride is my initial feeling.

"Spirit was absolutely key. There's no good team that doesn't possess a really strong spirit. We had a couple of moments in the second half where we could've relieved the pressure. It was a great effort."

22:41 GMT - Man City manager Pep Guardiola has been speaking to TNT Sports and said their play-off against Bayern or Real Madrid in mid-February will be "really tough".

"In the second half we lifted our soul and our hearts were free," he said. "For today we are in the next round, that's good. The first half was so academic, we didn't have the spark to do it against a team that defends really well.

"Going to Bayern Munich or Real Madrid will be really tough but it's in two weeks and in two weeks we have a few players back, the new signings back, so hopefully we can do two good games."

22:21 GMT - We are set for some mouthwatering fixtures with the pick of the bunch seeing Man City face either Real Madrid or Bayern in the play-off round.

Liverpool could be drawn against PSG in the last 16, with Aston Villa against Dortmund and Arsenal against Juventus or AC Milan distinct possibilities.

We could also see two Italian fixtures in consecutive rounds: AC Milan could be drawn against Serie A rivals Juventus in the play-off round before the winner meets Inter Milan in the last 16.

The draw for the play-off round will take place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon this Friday.

22:10 GMT - The Champions League play-offs will feature:

Monaco or Brest to play PSG or Benfica

Sporting Lisbon or Club Brugge to play Atalanta or Dortmund

Celtic or Man City to play Real Madrid or Bayern Munich

Feyenoord or Juventus to play AC Milan or PSV

The last 16 will feature:

Monaco, Brest, PSG or Benfica to play Liverpool or Barcelona

Sporting Lisbon, Club Brugge, Atalanta or Dortmund to play Lille or Aston Villa

Celtic, Man City, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich to play Atletico Madrid or Leverkusen

Feyenoord, Juventus, AC Milan or PSV to play Arsenal or Inter Milan

21:57 GMT - RED CARD! Liverpool substitute Amara Nallo has been sent off - just four minutes into his Champions League debut - with PSV 3-2 up. Liverpool will still top the table however with Barcelona drawing 2-2 at home to Atalanta.

21:53 GMT - GOAL! Aston Villa have a fourth against Celtic! Ollie Watkins passes to Morgan Rogers in the box after a defensive error and lashes into an open net.

21:51 GMT - PENALTY MISS! Raheem Sterling sees his penalty saved. Arsenal still lead Girona 2-1.

21:47 GMT - FULL-TIME! Man City are through to the play-offs after coming from behind to beat Club Brugge 3-1, while Bayern have beaten Slovan Bratislava 3-1 to progress. The duo could face each other in the next round.

21:47 GMT - GOAL! Slovan Bratislava have pulled a goal back against Bayern through Marko Tolic and despite trailing 3-1 tonight, they currently move off to the bottom of the table on goal difference. Young Boys drop to the foot.

21:45 GMT - We have around five minutes of normal time remaining in our games tonight.

21:42 GMT - GOAL! Goodness me. Lille are now 6-1 up against a totally stunned Feyenoord. As it stands, the French side are on their way to the last 16 in style.

21:38 GMT - GOAL! Dortmund are 3-1 up against Shakhtar - but they are currently ninth, one point behind Lille who are now 5-1 up against Feyenoord.

Atalanta have their second equaliser of the game against Barcelona through Mario Pasalic; Orkun Kokcu has scored to give Benfica a 2-0 lead over Juventus 2-0 and Bayern are 3-0 up against Slovan Bratislava. Kingsley Coman getting on the scoresheet.

21:34 GMT - GOAL! Man City have a third against Club Brugge. Savinho collects a perfect pass from John Stones and thumps home at the near post. City have now scored three Champions League goals in a game for the first time since 26th November 2024 (against Feyenoord, where they drew 3-3).

Elsewhere, Girona have equalised at home to Arsenal! Sloppy play from the Gunners as Cristhian Stuani is allowed to tap home at the back post - but the goal is disallowed through VAR for offside. Relief for the Gunners.

Lille have scored a fourth goal against Feyenoord and Sporting Lisbon have found an equaliser against Bologna, Conrad Harder thumping home after dribbling around in the box.

21:31 GMT - GOAL! They may already be eliminated but Guelor Kanga has scored a stunning strike against Young Boys to give Crvena zvezda a 1-0 lead.

Barcelona have re-taken the lead against Atalanta after just six minutes! Ronald Araujo heads home at the back post past Marco Carnesecchi's agonising dive.

21:28 GMT - PENALTY MISS! Dear oh dear. Ollie Watkins steps up for Aston Villa and slips at the last moment, balooning his penalty miles over the bar. Villa still lead 3-2. How big will that penalty miss turn out to be?

Elsewhere Lautaro Martinez has scored a hat-trick for Inter against Monaco as Henrikh Mkhitaryan's shot deflects into his path. Inter are currently fourth in the table and cruising through.

21:26 GMT - Man City have been totally dominant in this half and with 20 minutes to go have enjoyed 70% possession.

Atalanta have grabbed an equaliser at Barcelona with Ederson on target. Barcelona drop to second in the table.

21:24 GMT - GOAL! Leverkusen have scored a second goal at home to already-eliminated Sparta Prague. Nathan Tella with his first Champions League goal.

21:22 GMT - GOAL! Aston Villa have re-taken the lead against Celtic. Jacob Ramsey makes a superb pass to Ollie Watkins who fires the ball home inside the box.

Villa climb to seventh and will go through to the last 16 automatically - as it stands!

21:21 GMT - GOAL!  Bayern double their lead against Slovan Brataslava through Harry Kane and Dinamo Zagreb have a second goal against AC Milan through Marko Pjaca.

21:17 GMT - GOAL! Man City have taken the lead against Club Brugge! Joel Ordonez agonisingly prods into his own net and the Etihad Stadium erupts.

Dinamo Zagreb have re-taken the lead against AC Milan, Jude Bellingham has given Real Madrid a 2-0 lead over Brest, and Lille have scored a third against Feyenoord to take one giant leap into the last 16.

21:13 GMT - GOAL! Brest have equalised at home to Real Madrid! Ludovic Ajorque fires a shot into the corner that squeezes past Thibaut Courtois. Brest climb up to 14th, one place above Real Madrid currently.

Ousmane Dembele has scored a hat-trick as PSG lead Stuttgart 4-0, and 10-man AC Milan have equalised at Dinamo Zagreb through a thumping drive from Christian Pulisic.

21:09 GMT - GOAL! Man City have found a way back into it! Mateo Kovacic runs through the heart of Club Brugge and fires the ball past Simon Mignolet from outside the area. How crucial will that goal turn out to be? They have just over 40 minutes to find a crucial winner.

As things stand:

Top eight: Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, Borussia Dortmund

Play-offs: Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta, Aston Villa, PSV, PSG, Benfica, Feyenoord, Monaco, Celtic, Brest, Juventus, Club Brugge, Dinamo Zagreb, Sporting Lisbon

21:07 GMT - GOAL! Marco Carnesecchi goes walkabout in the Atalanta box allowing Lamine Yamal to tap into an open net. Barcelona have the lead and top the table on goal difference as it stands.

21:04 GMT - John Stones has just missed a free header from 10 yards out as City pile on the pressure at the Etihad Stadium.

21:03 GMT - And we're getting back underway. Man City have it all to do in this half.

20:55 GMT - As things stand, Man City are crashing out of Europe, Aston Villa and Celtic are into the play-offs, while Arsenal and Liverpool will go through to the last 16.

Among the standout ties from then, Aston Villa or Celtic could face each other in the play-off round and then come up against Arsenal in the last 16, Barcelona or Liverpool could be drawn against PSG in the round of 16 while AC Milan and Juventus could compete in an all-Italian battle for a place in that round.

20:51 GMT - Half-time scores

Aston Villa 2-2 Celtic

Barcelona 0-0 Atalanta

Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 Sparta Prague

Bayern 1-0 Slovan Bratislava

Brest 0-1 Real Madrid

Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 AC Milan

Dortmund 2-0 Shakhtar

Girona 1-2 Arsenal

Inter 2-0 Monaco

20:45 GMT - GOAL! Manchester City are stunned! Club Brugge have opened the scoring at the Etihad Stadium. Raphael Onyedika smashes home following a lovely flowing move to stun City.

PSV have scored a second goal at home to Liverpool. Joey Veerman passes to Ismael Saibar and it's 2-2!

20:39 GMT - GOAL! Celtic have come from behind to level at Aston Villa! Adam Idah slots past Martinez and it's 2-2 in the blink of an eye! What a way to silence Villa Park - aside from the away stand that has gone delirious!

Liverpool have re-taken the lead at PSV through Harvey Elliott, and Ethan Nwaneri - making his first Champions League start for the Gunners - has scored for Arsenal as they lead 2-1 at Girona after Jorginho equalised from the penalty spot.

20:36 GMT - GOAL! Arsenal are 1-0 down at Girona through Arnaut Danjuma who shoots over Neto from outside the box. Why on Earth was Neto out so far?

PSV have equalised against Liverpool. Johan Bakayoko hits the target after Cody Gakpo gave the Reds the lead - against his former club - from the penalty spot.

Elsewhere Atalanta have scored the opening goal against Barcelona - but wait, the goal has been ruled out, and there's a goal at Villa Park as Celtic have pulled one back through Adam Idah.

20:24 GMT - As things stand, Aston Villa or Arsenal could face Celtic in the last 16, with PSG or Real Madrid against Liverpool or Barcelona.

Oof.

Mancester City have had a goal ruled out and are still 0-0 against Club Brugge.

20:21 GMT - GOAL! PSG are in cruise control. Ousmane Dembele has doubled their lead over Stuttgart and they will go through to the play-offs as things stand.

Bologna, already eliminated from Europe, are leading at Sporting Lisbon! Milan loanee Tommaso Pobega has given the Italians the lead from a corner.

20:17 GMT - GOAL! Do we have a shock on our hands? After capitulating against Barcelona, Benfica are 1-0 up at Juventus through Vangelis Pavlidis. Can they hold on to this lead?

From Turin to Milan and Inter are 2-0 up at 10-man Monaco, but wait, there's a VAR review... and the goal is eventually allowed to stand.

Elsewhere, Martin Baturina has given Dinamo Zagreb the lead at home to AC Milan after latching on to a terrible error at the back for Milan.

20:15 GMT - Feyenoord have equalised at Lille through a Santiago Tomas Gimenez header, and Atletico Madrid are now 2-0 up away to Salzburg courtesy of Antoine Griezmann, who tucked a delightful finish under Alexander Schlager.

20:13 GMT - RED CARD! Monaco are in serious trouble at the San Siro. Already 1-0 down to Inter, they have just had Christian Mawissa Elebi sent off for hacking down Marcus Thuram when the striker was through on goal.

20:10 GMT - GOAL! Thomas Muller has given Bayern Munich the lead with a thumping header from Joshua Kimmich.

20:07 GMT - GOAL! PSG have opened the scoring at Stuttgart through Bradley Barcola. As things stand, Manchester City are heading out.

20:06 GMT - GOAL! Morgan Rogers doubles Aston Villa's lead by unleashing a rocket outside the box and into the top corner. What a start for Villa!

20:04 GMT - GOAL! Aston Villa have the lead through Morgan Rogers!

Goals too at Inter Milan, who have taken the lead against Monaco, Atletico Madrid at Salzburn, and Lille at Feyenoord.

Brest v Real Madrid has just kick-ed off, four minutes behind the others.

20:00 GMT - And we are underway - aside from at Brest v Real Madrid, where there is a slight delay.

19:59 GMT - The players are walking out and the Champions League anthem is ringing around Europe.

19:53 GMT - The British club most in danger of missing out of the latter stages is Manchester City, who simply must beat Club Brugge in order to progress.

Their stuttering form could be put down to not holding on to leads. City have dropped eight points from winning positions in the Champions League this season, with only RB Leipzig (9) losing more. In their seven matches so far, they have thrown away two 2+ goal leads (3-3 vs Feyenoord, 2-4 vs PSG) – the only side to do so in three games in a single European Cup campaign were Reims in the inaugural edition in 1955-56.

Manager Pep Guardiola is presumably going back to basics after naming the club's oldest starting XI in the Champions League (29y 12d) since September 2016 against Celtic (29y 165d).

19:50 GMT - Referee Tobias Stieler is the man in the middle at PSV v Liverpool, José María Sánchez Martínez is in charge at the Etihad Stadium for Man City’s clash with Club Brugge, while Maurizio Mariani and Clément Turpin are overseeing Girona v Arsenal and Villa's match against Celtic respectively.

Let's hope we end the evening talking about the group stage rather than dodgy VAR / refereeing decisions.

19:38 GMT - Former Bulgarian midfielder Stiliyan Petrov has played for both Aston Villa and Celtic and told the BBC his loyalties are split tonight.

The 45-year-old retired from playing in 2013 after suffering from acute leukaemia and has since made a full recovery.

"I have two boys, one is a Celtic fan, one is a Villa fan," he said. "You can imagine what's happening in my house. I'd take a draw.

"Through my battle with cancer I had the support of the two clubs. I'm really close to both clubs. I'm looking forward to the game."

19:30 GMT - We are 30 minutes away from kick-off around Europe. 27 of the 36 teams have something to play for tonight with only six places still available for the last 16.

Sixteen clubs will enter the play-offs while 12 will exit Europe altogether. Will Mancheter City be among those to miss out?

19:26 GMT - Man City's match against Club Brugge will take place at 20:00, as scheduled. There was concern the fire outside the stadium (see post at 18:30) could delay the kick-off.

The club released a statement that said: "We can confirm that tonight's match will kick off at 8pm as originally planned. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Etihad Stadium for tonight's match."

19:20 GMT - That is a very youthful Liverpool line-up tonight with the club already assured of their place in the round of 16.

According to Opta, the last time Liverpool started four players aged 21 or below in the Champions League was against Galatasaray in December 2006.

The youngest of today's starters is 19-year-old Jayden Danns, who was just 10 months and 20 days old on that day.

18:50 GMT - Team news has dropped ahead of tonight's final Champions League group matches.

18:30 GMT - A fire broke out at a merchandise shop outside the Etihad Stadium a little earlier. It's not clear whether anyone was inside at the time, but it's certainly not the best start to the evening at Manchester City.

A presentation was due to be held nearby but this has been cancelled and the area evacuated. The fire has since been put out.

It is not known whether the match between Man City and Club Brugge will be delayed. We'll bring you the latest when we have it.

You can read this story here.

18:00 GMT - We are two hours away from kick-off and just under an hour away from when team news drops. Stay with us throughout the night for all the key updates and reaction.

15:25 GMT - The UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League are entering the final rounds of their league phases this week and both competitions will see a staggering 18 matches take place simultaneously on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

We've picked out the best games of the lot for you amid the chaos - read more here!

14:35 GMT - What do Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Celtic need tonight?

Liverpool: The current league leaders are already through to the last 16 and will top the table if they avoid defeat at PSV or Barcelona fail to beat Atalanta.

They can only fall as low as second in the table meaning they will be the 'best team' on one side of the draw whatever their result tonight.

Arsenal: The Gunners are into the last 16 unless they lose and their goal difference takes a battering.

To fall out of the top eight they will need a heavy defeat against Girona, Inter earn at least a point against Monaco, and five out of nine teams below them to win, overturning a +6 goal difference.

Man City: It's simple for City: only a win can see them go through to the play-off round.

They will then climb above Club Brugge and either Stuttgart or PSG - who play each other - will be eliminated.

Aston Villa: In order to reach the last 16, Villa will need to beat Celtic and hope Atalanta fail to beat Barcelona. If Leverkusen win (currently in eighth), Villa can overtake them if they beat Celtic by two clear goals or more (Villa 3-0, Leverkusen 1-0 etc).

Villa can also reach the final eight if they win and at least one of the four teams above them fail to do so, or none of the four teams below them win by two goals or more.

A draw can also see Villa through to the last 16, but this is very unlikely: they will need Leverkusen to lose and Monaco, Feyenoord, Lille, Brest, Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus, PSV and Brugge all fail to get three points.

Celtic: The Hoops have already qualified for the play-offs and have no realistic chance of reaching the top eight.

In order to reach the last 16 tonight they will need to win and all 10 teams above them fail to do so (Lille play Feyenoord and Brest play Real Madrid), or a very complex and unlikely combination of other results.

You can read more on how other European teams can reach the knock-outs here.

14:30 GMT - Well this is it (as far as the league phase of the Champions League goes).

Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Celtic are among 36 teams in action bidding to climb the table and avoid a potentially tricky tie in the knock-outs - or in the case of Man City, tonight is just a matter of staying in the tournament.

Only the top eight teams will go through to the last 16 automatically while those placed ninth to 24th enter a play-off round.

Unlike previous years there is no last-chance Europa League saloon; those who finish 25th to 36th are eliminated from Europe altogether.

Here's how things look ahead of kick-off:

Top-eight guaranteed: Liverpool, Barcelona

Top-24 guaranteed: Arsenal, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Aston Villa, Monaco, Feyenoord, Lille, Brest, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Juventus, Celtic

At risk of elimination: PSV, Club Brugge, Benfica, PSG, Sporting, Stuttgart, Manchester City, Dinamo Zagreb, Shakhtar Donetsk

Eliminated: Bologna, Sparta Prague, Leipzig, Girona, Crvena zvezda, Sturm Graz, Salzburg, Slovan Bratislava, Young Boys
