Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says a deal for VfB Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade is close.

At this morning's media preview for Newcastle's trip to Leeds United on Saturday night, Howe was first asked about the news that terms had been agreed with Stuttgart over a fee for Germany U21 striker Woltemade.

Howe said: “Positive signs. Things are moving and developing in a good way at the moment."

Asked if Woltemade could be signed in time to make the visit to Elland Road, Howe insisted it would be too soon.

He then added: "We are still looking, there is still a chance to improve the squad."

Tonali could make it

On team news, Howe revealed midfielder Sandro Tonali was set to make the trip: "He's battling", though ruled out fellow midfielder Joelinton. Both players were forced off during defeat at home to Liverpool on Sunday.

"Relatively good news on both players (Sandro Tonali and Joelinton), when they left the pitch we feared they may be out long-term. Joey’s scan was good but he will miss this weekend, we'll hopefully get him back for the game after the international break. Sandro's injury isn’t serious, he is battling to be fit for tomorrow."

However, Howe says Swiss defender Fabian Schar will make the clash: "Fabian Schär is available. We followed concussion protocols, he will be fine to play."

Elland Road full of emotion

On the Elland Road atmosphere at night, Howe smiled: "The start of the game is going to be very important for us. They have invested in a lot of good players.

"I love going to Elland Road, it is a stadium full of emotion, and we'll need to use that emotion this weekend."

Howe also stated William Osula could start after his impressive showing in defeat to Liverpool.

He continued: "I thought Will did really well when he came on on Monday night. He gave us renewed energy, he has improved a lot from this time last year.

"He has gained the knowledge and experience of how we play, he is gaining in confidence and that goal will do him the world of good."

Champions League draw

Howe, before he signed off, was also asked about Newcastle's Champions League draw, which will include games against Barcelona and title holders PSG.

He said: "Really interesting, some great games, exciting prospects. Very competitive matches, what an opportunity to enjoy more games in the Champions League.

"It will be tough and challenging but we look forward to it. Barcelona at home - an amazing fixture for us, you get instantly drawn to that with the links with Sir Bobby Robson and the history of the club."
