Match report

The visitors had not long survived a scare, with Joelinton unable to find Bruno Guimarães after pickpocketing Yarek Gasiorowski, when they were punished just eight minutes into proceedings.

Guimarães cut out Matěj Kovář’s pass and immediately played the ball to Joeltinon, who selflessly teed up Yoane Wissa for the striker’s first UCL goal. Newcastle had some sloppy moments of their own after taking the lead, although Eddie Howe’s side defended their box effectively against any PSV crosses.

While Sven Botman looked particularly solid defensively, the Dutchman wasn’t quite as assured in the opposition box as his scuffed attempt rolled harmlessly wide.

The more usual attackers were far more clinical to capitalise on an awfully underhit Gasiorowski pass on the half-hour mark, as Wissa slid in to pass the ball across for Anthony Gordon to convert into a vacant net.

There was disappointment for both teams as Anass Salah-Eddine and Guimarães both went off injured before the break, although Newcastle did retain their buffer heading into HT thanks to Nick Pope denying Paul Wanner.

Gasiorowski managed to deflect a Malick Thiaw header wide shortly after the restart, and Jerdy Schouten then nudged Wissa out of the way to head a cross behind as Newcastle remained on top.

The visitors kept trying to no avail, as Joelinton blocked a speculative Mauro Júnior strike before Gasiorowski was booked for a late challenge on Kieran Trippier, which means he will be suspended on matchday eight.

In stark contrast, Newcastle had yet more reason for celebration in the 65th minute, when Harvey Barnes capitalised on unconvincing defending from a long Pope ball by gliding into the box and effortlessly beating Kovář.

Kiliann Sildillia then headed over and Couhaib Driouech fired marginally wide as Newcastle maintained their clean sheet on the way to convincingly ending a three-game run without a win inside 90 minutes, while also going seventh in the table ahead of their final league phase match against Paris Saint-Germain.

They also halted PSV’s six-game winning run across all competitions to leave the Eredivisie leaders 22nd and clinging onto their UCL hopes as they prepare to face Bayern Munich.
