Having concluded the league phase in eleventh position, PSG failed to gain automatic qualification for the last sixteen. For the second consecutive season, the Parisians were drawn against a fellow Ligue 1 outfit in the knockout play-offs, facing Monaco after thrashing Brest in the same round last term. However, it proved to be a much tighter contest this time around.

A Désiré Doué double helped the visitors earn a hard-fought 3-2 triumph in the principality, as Monaco paid the price for Aleksandr Golovin’s early red card. Sébastien Pocognoli’s side were also reduced to 10 men in the return leg, but only after taking the lead on the stroke of half-time. In a chaotic ten-minute spell that ultimately decided the outcome of the tie, Monaco midfielder Mamadou Coulibaly was shown two yellow cards before Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG back in the driving seat. A late equaliser from Jordan Teze set up a grandstand finish, but the hosts would hold on to claim a narrow aggregate victory.

Chelsea’s pathway to this point was far simpler, thanks to a series of impressive performances during the opening stage of the competition. However, the Blues were far stronger at Stamford Bridge than they were on the road, a reality that may provide a further source of encouragement for Wednesday’s hosts.

After being comfortably beaten at Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena on matchday one, Chelsea battled to a sobering 2-2 draw with Azerbaijani underdogs Qarabağ in Baku. A narrow defeat to Atalanta then followed, before the West Londoners returned to Italy to claim a memorable 3-2 win over Napoli. That gutsy display in Naples left them in sixth position in the final league phase standings, ensuring they became one of five English clubs to progress directly to the last sixteen.

Wednesday’s contest between Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea will be televised live on TNT Sports, with coverage commencing an hour before kick-off.

Paris Saint-Germain v Chelsea team news

Both managers have a handful of first-team players out injured, but we should see two almost full-strength sides take to the field on Wednesday night. Liam Rosenior has stuck to the same tactical system since taking the reins at Stamford Bridge in early January, while the defending champions will line up in their familiar 4-3-3 formation.

Paris Saint-Germain team news

Senny Mayulu and Ousmane Dembélé have both been nursing calf issues of late, but the attacking duo both played exactly 60 minutes of Paris Saint-Germain’s 3-1 home defeat to Monaco on Friday night. Dembélé in particular has endured an injury-ravaged six months, but last year’s Ballon d'Or winner is determined to stay fit as we move into the business end of the season.

Although it was originally hoped he would return to action much sooner, Fabián Ruiz is set to miss both meetings with Chelsea. The Spanish international has been out since late January, but is still feeling pain in his knee. Fellow midfielder João Neves is a doubt for Wednesday due to an ongoing ankle problem, while talented teenager Quentin Ndjantou remains out with a hamstring strain.

Having seized his opportunity during Lucas Chevalier’s brief spell on the sidelines, Russian goalkeeper Matvei Safonov will once again be entrusted between the sticks. Luis Enrique has a decision to make in central defence, as three players vie for two starting berths. Although he usually opts for a partnership of Illia Zabarnyi and Willian Pacho for domestic fixtures, the Spanish tactician has often relied on the experience of club captain Marquinhos in European competition.

Chelsea team news

Although Rosenior has stated that he’s comfortable switching between goalkeepers, it seems Filip Jörgensen is now the number one following Robert Sánchez’s error-strewn performance against Arsenal. The Spanish shot-stopper did start Chelsea’s thrilling FA Cup clash with Wrexham over the weekend, but expect Jörgensen to get the nod on Wednesday night.

Having developed a hamstring issue during January’s comeback victory over West Ham, Jamie Gittens remains sidelined. Estêvão is also missing with a hamstring complaint, while Dário Essugo returned to action on Saturday evening following a lengthy layoff. The 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder is back available after undergoing surgery on this thigh at the beginning of the season, but wasn’t drafted into Chelsea’s latest Champions League squad during last month’s adjustment window.

Wesley Fofana was initially feared to have sustained a knock against Aston Villa, but the French defender shut down any rumours of an injury via a social media post. Levi Colwill continues his rehabilitation after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last summer, but could be back in the mix before the end of the season. This week’s meeting in Paris could come too soon for industrious full-back Marc Cucurella, who has only made two substitute appearances over the past month.

João Pedro will hope to extend his recent goalscoring purple patch, after netting six goals in his last five appearances across all competitions.

Head-to-head record

These two European giants met in the final of last summer’s Club World Cup, less than six weeks after Paris Saint-Germain’s long-awaited maiden Champions League triumph. A brace from Cole Palmer handed Chelsea an early two-goal advantage in New Jersey, before João Pedro put the game to bed just before the interval.

The last meeting between the pair came during the 2015/16 Champions League campaign, once again clashing at the last sixteen stage. The Parisians would emerge triumphant on that occasion, after winning both legs of the tie. Since that disappointing exit just over a decade ago, Chelsea have won each of their six Champions League fixtures against French opposition (Lille four times and Stade Rennes twice).

PSG reached last season’s Champions League showpiece by eliminating three English clubs in the earlier knockout rounds, as Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal all fell victim to Luis Enrique’s men.
