Reigning Champions League kings PSG are hoping to become the first team to successfully defend their UCL title since 2018. Can Liverpool end Les Parisiens’ hopes? This quarter-final first leg at Parc des Princes could prove definitive, says Flashscore betting expert Richard Trenchard.

While the 2025/26 Champions League hasn’t all been plain sailing for PSG, they certainly hit their stride in the Round of 16 demolition of Chelsea.

Having finished 11th in the league phase, before sneaking past countrymen Monaco in the play-off round, it seemed like Luis Enrique’s men were suffering some kind of second-season syndrome.

But then they destroyed Chelsea in a thrilling show of attacking football, winning 8-2 on aggregate.

Curiously, the Londoners ‘won’ the xG count in both legs – not that there are any prizes awarded for that, so maybe Liverpool will be sensing something of an opportunity.

However, the Reds are underdogs for this tie. They may not even finish inside the Premier League top four – a stark drop-off after winning the title last term, while back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Manchester City are hardly the ideal dress rehearsal for a trip to the backyard of the European champions and their fearsome front line.

PSG team news

The Ligue 1 title race between PSG and Lens was titanic until the latter just recently started to drop points, which enabled Enrique to rest some of his key players against Toulouse on Friday evening.

The likes of Vitinha and Nuno Mendes were benched, while Marquinhos was afforded the luxury of the evening off.

The only needle-moving absentee is likely to be Bradley Barcola, who is struggling with an ankle injury, while Fabian Ruiz is also nursing a knock.

Liverpool team news

The fact Arne Slot named pretty much his strongest available eleven against Man City on Saturday in the FA Cup, before watching his side being dismantled 4-0, will have offered the Dutchman much cause for concern.

Of that 11, it’s possible that Alexis Mac Allister will come in for Curtis Jones – such is his big game experience, but otherwise it might be a case of as you were for the bruised Reds.

Alisson’s hamstring injury will certainly keep him out, with Giorgi Mamardashvili continuing as deputy. In a rare bit of bright news for Slot, Alexander Isak may be fit enough for a place on the bench after a nearly four-month absence.

Head-to-head record

You don’t need a particularly strong memory to remember the last time that PSG and Liverpool met – that came in the Champions League round of 16 in March 2025.

The English side won the first leg 1-0 at the Parc des Princes with a true smash-and-grab raid, losing the shot count 2-27 but still clinching victory via Harvey Elliott’s late goal.

In the second leg at Anfield, PSG were once again the dominant force and this time turned the tables with a 1-0 win of their own – Ousmane Dembele notching the winning goal.

That forced the tie into extra time and then penalties, with the French side winning as Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones missed their spot kicks for Liverpool.

All told, these sides have met six times in competitive action, with three wins apiece.
