The 2025 UEFA Champions League (UCL) winners, PSG, welcome Newcastle to the French capital, with both needing a win to qualify directly to the last-16.

PSG take on Newcastle in the last matchweek of the UCL League Phase. The holders of the UCL are looking to go one better than they did last year and secure automatic qualification to the last-16. A win against the Geordies would be the only way they can make certain of this, as they are level with their opponents and six other teams on 13 points.

Newcastle come to Paris not in form. They have won one game of their last four, but that did come in the UCL last time out against PSV. Losing on the weekend at home to Aston Villa was not a great warm-up for the Magpies; however, if one team thrives in adversity, it is Eddie Howe’s men. Qualification to the next round is a minimum reward, but a win at the Parc des Princes could give Newcastle the boost they need to turn around their indifferent form.

PSG team news

PSG may be without some notable players for the visit of Newcastle. Joao Neves has been out for the last three games with a muscle injury, whilst Kang-In Lee has missed the last seven with a thigh injury. Fabian Ruiz and Nuno Mendes missed the game against Auxerre on Friday with injuries, and Achraf Hakimi has not featured since returning from AFCON. None of the five is thought to be available for Wednesday; however, Hakimi is the most likely if any do.

One player who is back for this UCL game is Lucas Hernadez who has missed the last two ties in the competition due to suspension. Neither Ballon D’Or winner Ousmanne Dembele nor Desire Doue started on Friday in the league, but both are expected to start against Newcastle.

Newcastle team news

Eddie Howe is hoping that Joelinton will be okay for the trip to PSG, after the midfielder went off with a groin injury against Aston Villa on Sunday. His fellow Brazilian, Bruno Guimares, watched the 2-0 loss from the stands after suffering an ankle injury in last week's UCL tie against PSV. Howe said that they do not think it is a serious injury for Guimares and are hoping he will be fit for Wednesday. Tino Liveramento remains out, as do Jacob Murphy and Fabian Schar.

Whilst many players remain out, Dan Burn made his return to the matchday squad against Villa, and despite not getting on, he could feature against PSG depending on the formation chosen by Howe to tackle the French champions. Lewis Miley is set to continue in the team as well, but it is to be seen whether he will be in midfield or at right back.

Head-to-Head record

This will be the third meeting between PSG and Newcastle, having first met in the 2023/24 Champions League group stages. Newcastle memorably won the first tie 4-1 at St. James Park, before drawing at the Parc des Princes after PSG were awarded a dubious injury-time penalty to make it 1-1.

Newcastle come into the game in up and down form, winning one of their last four, a similar trend that PSG are following too. The French outfit have won two of their last four games, but have lost the other two.

This will be Newcastle’s 10th away game against a French side in Europe, while they have only managed one victory from the previous nine (D3, L5). Paris SG have hosted an English side on 16 occasions in the UEFA Champions League since the 2013/14 season, winning eight, drawing four and losing four. In total, those matches have seen 54 goals scored (31 for, 23 against), at an average of 3.4 per game, and both sides have scored at least once in 14 of the 16 fixtures.
