Tottenham Hotspur head into today’s Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund preparing to part ways with Thomas Frank.

Sources close to the situation have told Flashscore that while there has been serious consideration about ending his reign before now, the European fixture is expected to mark his final game in charge.

The condition of the squad for this match led the club to push their sack decision back.

Tottenham’s squad is severely depleted, with Frank having just eleven available outfield players for the fixture due to a combination of injuries, suspensions and ineligibility. It was felt to be an unfair and unreasonable moment to suddenly put someone else in charge.

On Monday, Frank had lunch with chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, sporting director Johan Lange and Nick Beucher, the influential son-in-law of co-owner Vivienne Lewis. He has described the meeting as amicable - but even if that is the case, the writing appears to be on the wall.

It is worth noting that some members of the Tottenham boardroom have felt Frank should have lost his job a month ago. Venkatesham has been Frank’s strongest supporter in pulling him through this difficult period.

However, it would take an extraordinary turnaround to save his job from here, with some sources even suggesting to Flashscore that an announcement regarding his future could come as early as Wednesday.

If that proves to be the case, Johnny Heitinga may step in as interim head coach, just days after arriving as Frank’s first-team assistant.

Either way, the club has already begun considering long-term replacements, and it is understood that the names being discussed are of the very highest profile, including Mauricio Pochettino and Xavi Hernandez.

Tottenham are eager to compete for the world’s top talent while retaining their key players. To achieve that, the club may feel an elite manager is required to lead the way.

Today is likely to be a very significant day for Spurs.
