After the embarrassment in Madrid, Tottenham hope that they can turn their UEFA Champions League (UCL) tie against Atletico Madrid around back on home soil.

Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid meet in the second leg of their UCL last 16 tie, with the match anything but balanced.

After falling apart in 15 minutes to be three goals down, goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was subbed off after two of his mistakes had directly resulted in two of the goals. The match eventually ended 5-2, with those goals providing some hope for Spurs fans that they could do something dramatic at home to turn around the three goal defecit.

Diego Simeone’s reputation has been built on defensive solidity. The thought of his side losing this tie from this position seems unlikely. Yet, a couple of weeks ago, they almost let Barcelona come back from four goals down in a two-legged tie in the Copa del Rey, showing that there may be a chance for Spurs. Barcelona, they are not, but the UCL can create the most extraordinary European nights where anything can happen.

Tottenham team news

The Sunday saviour, Richarlison, will not be around for the visit of Atletico Madrid because of an accumulation of yellow cards. Another player who featured on Sunday against Liverpool, Souza, won’t feature on Wednesday either, as he was not included in Spurs’ Champions League squad.

Conor Gallagher missed the Anfield trip because of illness, but he may be back. Destiny Udogie has not featured for six games, but he may also be back for this tie. Apart from those two, the Spurs' injury list remains long with 10 players in the treatment room.

Atletico Madrid team news

The big news is that Jan Oblak will be missing for the trip to north London. The Slovenian stopper has a muscle injury, and it seems like he may even be missing for the Madrid derby on the weekend.

Rodrigo Mendoza is set to be missing as well, having not featured in the past two games because of injury. Pablo Barrios returned to the Atleti side for the first time in nine games against Spurs, yet now it seems as though he is back in the treatment room, having missed the game against Getafe on the weekend with a muscle injury.

Head-to-head record

After last week, Tottenham have now won just three of their 16 meetings with Spanish sides in all European competition. That match at the Metropolitano was the first official meeting between the two, with the only other coming in preseason in 2016, which Atleti also won. If there is hope for Spurs in this tie, then it is the fact that Atletico Madrid have lost on five of their last six visits to England (W1).

Both teams played on the weekend, too. Spurs came back from a goal down to draw against Liverpool at Anfield, scoring in the 90th minute. They were much improved and should perform better on Wednesday. Atleti beat Getafe 1-0 in a relatively comfortable game, which kept up their momentum and extended their winning run in all competitions to three.
