Although their domestic form has left much to be desired, Spurs continue to perform relatively well in Europe.

Thomas Frank’s side acquired an impressive eight points from their opening four Champions League outings, beating Villarreal and FC Copenhagen either side of hard-fought draws with Bodø/Glimt and Monaco. A 5-3 defeat in the French capital to current holders Paris Saint-Germain did little to dampen their spirits, as the Lilywhites bounced back by comfortably overcoming Slavia Prague on home soil. Those results leave them in eleventh place in the league phase table, within touching distance of the top eight and four points above the elimination zone.

Borussia Dortmund are just one place above Spurs in tenth, having also earned eleven points so far. The Bundesliga outfit have been involved in some astonishing contests throughout this Champions League campaign. Either themselves or the opposition scored four goals in each of Dortmund’s opening five fixtures, while both sides achieved this feat in their 4-4 draw with Juventus

After the eight-goal thriller in Turin, Niko Kovač's men registered convincing victories over LaLiga outfits Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal but lost heavily to Manchester City at the Etihad. A frustrating 2-2 draw with Bodø/Glimt followed on matchday six, but Dortmund remain hopeful of finishing in the automatic qualification spots.

TNT Sports will broadcast live coverage of Wednesday’s clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while those with a discovery+ subscription can access the match using the network’s dedicated app service.

Tottenham v Borussia Dortmund team news

Both managers have been forced to deal with several absences in recent weeks, although Thomas Frank’s current injury list is more extensive than his counterpart’s. It’s likely Spurs will adopt their regular 4-2-3-1 formation, while Dortmund are expected to set up with a back three.

Tottenham Hotspur team news

After being withdrawn during the closing stages of Tottenham’s 3-2 loss to Bournemouth, Rodrigo Bentancur is set to be sidelined for some time. The Uruguayan midfielder sustained a hamstring tear at the Vitality Stadium and has since undergone surgery. Fellow South American Richarlison is also struggling with a hamstring issue, but his injury isn't quite as severe.

Mohammed Kudus is expected to be unavailable until at least March due to a thigh strain, while talented youngster Lucas Bergvall may still not be 100% fit after picking up a knock against the Cherries.

Spurs also have a couple of long-term absentees, with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski still on the treatment table. Although Maddison is highly unlikely to feature before the end of the season, his Swedish teammate is set to return to first-team training at some stage in the next month. It’s irrelevant anyway, as the attacking duo – alongside ostracised midfielder Yves Bissouma, Romanian defender Radu Drăgușin, and versatile forward Mathys Tel – are not included in the North Londoner’s Champions League squad.

January signing Conor Gallagher has already made six appearances in the Champions League this term, but isn’t eligible to play for Tottenham until the knockout stages. UEFA dictate that clubs can only draft existing or incoming players into their European squad if a current member has been out injured for a period of at least 60 days, although any replacements can only be made ahead of matchday six. Neither of these criteria can be met in this instance, so the former Atlético Madrid star won’t be involved.

Borussia Dortmund team news

Despite being extremely short of defensive options just before the Bundesliga’s winter break, Niko Kovač is now able to rely on a settled backline.

Waldemar Anton missed December’s meetings with Freiburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach after developing a hamstring complaint, but the Uzbek-born defender now appears to be back up to full match fitness. Although Ramy Bensebaini has now returned from international duty following Algeria’s quarter-final exit at the Africa Cup of Nations, fellow centre-back Aarón Anselmino – who left Chelsea to join Dortmund on a season-long loan in the summer – is carrying a muscle injury.

Turkish midfielder Salih Özcan is still nursing an Achilles strain and could be out for another six weeks, while a similar problem has reduced Julian Brandt's game time over the past month. However, the German international is in contention to start on Wednesday night.

Having registered three goals – including a brace against Villarreal on matchday five – and two assists in his six Champions League appearances this season, Serhou Guirassy is expected to lead the line.

Head-to-Head record

These two opponents have met on six previous occasions in Europe, with Spurs emerging triumphant in four of these fixtures. All of these triumphs came in the Champions League, although at two different stages of the competition. Tottenham beat Dortmund home and away in their two Group H clashes during the 2017/18 season, enabling them to advance to the knockout stages. A second set of victories came in the last sixteen just over a year later, as Mauricio Pochettino’s men forged a route to the final in Madrid.

Although they defeated Spurs on home soil and at White Hart Lane midway through the 2015/16 Europa League campaign, Borussia Dortmund have remarkably lost ten of their fourteen away Champions League matches in England. The latest in this disappointing sequence of results came in November, when Manchester City recorded a 4-1 win over their German visitors.
