Blackburn play-off hopes hang by a thread despite rescuing Luton draw

A late Hayden Carter goal kept Blackburn Rovers faint play-off hopes alive as they drew 1-1 with Luton Town at Ewood Park.

Blackburn dominated possession in the first half but couldn’t find a way past Luton’s organised defence. Harry Pickering should have put Blackburn 1-0 up after the ball fell to him in the Hatters penalty area yet somehow put his effort wide, despite having the goal at his mercy.

Luton slowly grew into the game, and in the 24th minute, Carlton Morris’s deflected effort was inches away from giving the visitors the lead against the run of play.

However, Blackburn raised the tempo and continued to test Luton, with Ethan Horvath called into action to deny Joe Rankin-Costello after he was played in by Sammie Szmodics.

Both sides created decent chances as HT approached, yet Alfie Doughty couldn’t find a finish after some good build-up play, and Tyrhys Dolan got around the back of the Luton defence but his effort couldn’t find the target.

Dolan was denied again minutes before the break when he cut inside on his right foot and unleashed a curling effort that look destined for the top corner, but Sonny Bradley was on hand to head the ball away with Horvath rooted to the spot.

There was a feeling that Blackburn would be made to pay for not making the most of their first-half chances, and a pair of Luke Berry opportunties after the restart served as warning signs for the hosts.

Five minutes into the second half Morris whipped in an expertly-delivered cross for Tom Lockyer, who reacted quickest and headed home to give the Hatters the lead.

As Rovers fought to get back into the game, it became more apparent that it wasn’t going to be their day, especially when Rankin-Costello’s effort from outside the box looked to be destined for the back of the net only for ex-Blackburn Amari'i Bell to divert it wide.

At the other end, Morris was still a threat and was almost provider for a second time when he found Sonny Bradley unmarked, but the Luton centre-back saw his effort crash off the crossbar.

However, there was late drama when Carter was left unmarked in the Luton area and headed home Sorba Thomas’ corner to equalise.

There was still time for some more late drama as Szmodics’ effort rattled the bar in injury time, leaving half of Ewood Park believing it had gone in as Blackburn had to settle for a point. Rovers now need to win at Millwall and hope results go their way on the final day if they are to secure a play-off spot.
