The Championship returned last weekend after the final international break of 2024, signalling the start of a busy festive period for the clubs of England's second tier.

This time of the campaign is where the table will properly take shape and the automatic promotion contenders will emerge, and we're already starting to see it tighten up at the top of the division.

Leeds came out on top in a seven-goal thriller against Swansea to move into first in the league while Burnley also ground out a narrow 1-0 win over Bristol City to go within two points of the top two.

Both Sunderland and Sheffield United could only manage draws meaning the top three are all level on 32, with the Clarets in fourth spot on 30.

As always, Flashscore has taken a look at all the key talking points from the weekend's Championship action.

Tight at the top

As mentioned, the top four is incredibly tight with three teams (Leeds, Sunderland and Sheffield United) averaging two points per game - usually enough to get promoted out of the division.

Burnley follow closely behind after their win at the weekend, with every club having played 16 fixtures.

Both Sunderland and Sheffield United will be disappointed after their respective matches last weekend, with the Black Cats blowing a 1-0 lead in the dying moments against Millwall to draw 1-1 while the Blades could only manage a 2-2 draw against struggling Coventry after Anel Ahmedhodzic was sent off.

Regis Le Bris' Sunderland have drawn their last four games in a row and have shown a worrying theme of sitting back after taking the lead, which has cost them a couple of times already this season.

They suffered the same fate at the Den after Aaron Connolly's opener was cancelled out in stoppage time, with midfielder Milan Aleksic missing a golden opportunity before Millwall countered and Femi Azeez netted a 93rd-minute equaliser.

The Black Cats are now without a win in their last four but are also undefeated in their previous nine fixtures - leaving them on a very fine line between pushing on for a promotion charge or slipping down to play-off contention.

Sheffield United also suffered a disappointing result with star defender Ahmedhodzic dismissed for pushing the face of Coventry youngster Norman Bassette; although replays showed the Belgian certainly made a meal of the whole affair.

Bassette was seen giving a cheeky wink and blowing a kiss to the complaining defenders after rolling on the floor in apparent agony, fooling the referee into showing a red card.

The Blades had been 2-1 up at the time and held out for another 40 minutes before conceding the leveller towards the end of the second half after Bobby Thomas converted a well-worked set piece.

Things were much better for Leeds, who showed real grit to steal a 4-3 win against Swansea.

Daniel Farke's side came from behind twice to level before taking a 3-2 lead, only to concede an equaliser in the dying moments of normal time - before Wilfried Gnonto went straight up the other end to make it 4-3 barely a minute later, sealing a famous triumph in Wales.

Burnely also enjoyed another win, grinding out a 1-0 victory over Bristol City thanks to Jaidon Anthony's first-half strike.

Andre Gray makes his resurgence

Remember former Burnley and Watford striker Andre Gray? You know him; scored several Championship goals, married a member of Little Mix, and has some infamous controversial tweets.

Well, the forward appeared to be done in England after two seasons abroad but was handed a short-term deal by Wayne Rooney's Plymouth Argyle back in October and is now starting to show that he still has what it takes to compete in the second tier.

The 33-year-old bagged a brace against ex-club Watford on Friday night, twice pegging back his former employers with exceptional finishes including a 96th-minute equaliser to ensure the match ended 2-2.

Gray's first saw him hit a sweet first-time volley into the bottom corner, showing incredible composure and technique to convert from a difficult pass.

The striker then somehow topped that with a beautiful curling effort in what was essentially the final kick of the game to snatch a point for Plymouth.

While many thought they had seen the last of Gray, the veteran proved he could still compete in the Championship and can be one of the players that Argyle lean on during their push for survival in England's second tier.

Middlesbrough gaining ground

Despite a slow start to the season in front of goal, Middlesbrough look to have finally clicked when it comes to their attacking play.

This was evident in their 6-2 thrashing of Oxford on Saturday with star forward Emmanuel Latte Lath netting a hat-trick.

Promising midfielder Finn Azaz also bagged a brace while Tommy Conway scored his sixth of the season.

Michael Carrick's side had struggled to find the back of the net in the opening stages of the season but now have 18 goals in their last six games - six against Oxford, five vs Luton, four away at QPR and three in a draw with Hull.

It bodes well for the Teesiders who now find themselves in fifth position and just five points away from the automatic promotion places with several players on top form heading into a busy part of the season.

Latte Lath is certainly one to keep an eye on in the Golden Boot race, providing no clubs come in for him in January.

Both Azaz and Liverpool loanee Ben Doak also provide exceptional creative threat and look to be building a fantastic relationship as part of a free-flowing attack - Middlesbrough are certainly a team to watch as the festive period draws near.

Gray takes Goal of the Week

As mentioned earlier, Plymouth's Gray scored two excellent goals against Watford and in reality, either of them could take our Goal of the Week - so take your pick!

We've opted to give the award to his first effort, a precise first-time volley into the bottom corner.

There were a few decent efforts this week, notably Connolly's volley for Sunderland, Tom Cannon's curler in Stoke's draw with QPR and Mason Holgate's clever finish for West Brom in their draw against Norwich - but both of Gray's goals edge it for us!

Latte Lath hitting form

Middlesbrough's Latte Lath bagged a hat-trick in their win over Oxford to take his overall goal tally to seven for the season while also earning him a 9.8 Flashscore player rating.

That was by far the highest of any Championship player over the weekend which makes him our Player of the Week!
