The final run-in for the regular portion of the 2025/26 Championship season is drawing closer, following immediately after the final international break of the campaign.

Seven rounds of fixtures remain, with every club on 39 games played and only two sides realistically certain of their fates for the end of the season.

Sheffield Wednesday have been mathematically relegated for over a month after multiple points deductions - the Owls are guaranteed to finish bottom of the league.

At the other end of the table, Coventry sit top of the division with a nine-point cushion on second place and an 11-point gap to the play-offs.

While not officially promoted yet, it seems like just a matter of time before Frank Lampard's Sky Blues confirm their status as a Premier League club for 2026/27.

Elsewhere, the Championship is wide open heading into the final run of fixtures, so Flashscore has decided to take stock of everything that could happen between now and the end of the campaign.

Promotion race heats up

As mentioned, Coventry are comfortable at the top of the league, and it would take a significant collapse to drop to second, let alone out of the automatic promotion spots.

Their nearest challengers are Middlesbrough on 71 points, followed closely by Ipswich and Millwall, each on 69 points.

None of the three clubs chasing automatic promotion have been able to take advantage of various slip-ups from their competitors in recent weeks.

Ipswich have won one and drawn three of their last four games, Middlesbrough have also won just once, drawn two and lost one, while Millwall have been victorious twice, drawn once and lost once.

A crucial clash between the Lions and the Tractor Boys ended 1-1 last weekend which meant neither side could gain an advantage in the battle for a top two spot.

Middlesbrough have second place in their grasp and still have to play both Millwall and Ipswich in their remaining seven fixtures - meaning automatic promotion is firmly in their hands.

Kim Hellberg's side have struggled for consistency lately with just three wins since the start of February but have shown in the past that they can go on a winning run if things click together.

A two-week break for international fixtures should see key players Morgan Whittaker and Hayden Hackney return to fitness and Hellberg will be hoping they can play a part in Boro's clash with Millwall on April 3rd.

The Teesiders still look like favourites to clinch second spot, but both Millwall and Ipswich will push them right to the end of the season.

What's crucial is that the two sides who are forced to settle for a play-off spot don't let that disappointment derail their last remaining shot at Premier League football.

Play-off options narrowed down

The field of teams in the race to secure a play-off spot has narrowed down considerably, with several clubs in mid-table dropping off in recent weeks.

Aside from two of Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Millwall, no fewer than four clubs are in contention to secure the remaining spots in the top six.

Hull and Southampton currently sit fifth and sixth and are followed closely by Wrexham and Derby.

The Tigers have 66 points and, while a push for the top two seems unlikely, they have a very realistic chance of finishing in the play-off spots.

Aside from an encounter with Coventry, all of their remaining matches are against sides placed 10th or below.

Southampton sit just three points behind on 63 and have built up plenty of momentum since the end of January.

The Saints are unbeaten in their last 12 Championship matches (nine wins, three draws) - and they have the perfect opportunity to cement their play-off status in the coming weeks.

Their next two league fixtures are against none other than Wrexham and Derby. Victory in those games would be season-defining moments for Tonda Eckert's side.

Wrexham are outside the top six on goal difference and will equally be looking at the match with Southampton as an excellent opportunity to push into the play-offs.

A stumbling block for Phil Parkinson's side is that their final two games of the campaign are against the top two clubs Coventry and Middlesbrough.

As for Derby, they also still have to face Coventry - as well as Southampton - but other than that, they have fixtures against clubs in the lower reaches of the Championship table.

A nervy relegation battle ahead

As we mentioned, Sheffield Wednesday are already relegated and will finish bottom of the league - which leaves two more clubs at risk of dropping into League One.

Oxford and Leicester make up the rest of the bottom three on 39 points each with Portsmouth just above them on 40 and West Brom and Blackburn Rovers in touching distance on 43.

Interestingly, only West Brom and Blackburn still have to play each other, which means each club must rely on slip-ups from those around them.

Something else to note is that everyone but Rovers and Portsmouth still have a match against Sheffield Wednesday, which presents an interesting encounter in the fight for survival.

The Owls have won just once all season and should be a good opportunity at three valuable points - but they also have nothing to lose and would likely enjoy playing a role in the fate of those clubs above them.

If Leicester and Oxford can win their respective fixtures, they would take a huge step towards survival and make up ground on the three sides above them.

The Foxes have won just twice in the league in 2026, though, and things are looking bleak if they can't turn a few of their nervy draws into victories.

West Brom looked to be in a similar boat but back-to-back wins and clean sheets mean the Baggies are in a more promising situation now.

Oxford have likewise hit some form with three wins in their last five, but Pompey are on a run of five defeats in their last six fixtures and must quickly address their slump before it's too late.
