The Championship table shifted over the weekend as Leeds dropped off of top spot while Plymouth suffered another heavy defeat under the guidance of Wayne Rooney.

Sheffield United moved into first position after a narrow 1-0 victory at home to Sunderland, with Burnley joining them in the top two following a routine 2-0 win over Stoke.

Elsewhere, new Coventry manager Frank Lampard picked up his first point in charge after twice coming from behind in a 2-2 draw with Cardiff while struggling Portsmouth squandered a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw against Swansea.

As always, Flashscore has looked at all the major talking points from the weekend's action.

Sheffield United topple Sunderland

Sheffield United went top of the Championship after picking up a narrow 1-0 win against promotion rivals Sunderland, with Tom Davies netting a late winner at Bramall Lane.

The scoreline perhaps doesn't do the encounter justice, though, with the match also seeing a penalty missed and two red cards.

Sunderland started fast and earned a spot-kick when teenager Tommy Watson was pulled down inside the area, only for Patrick Roberts to see his effort saved by the in-form Michael Cooper.

Things went from bad to worse for the Black Cats as defender Chris Mepham was shown a red card for bringing down Tyrese Campbell and denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The Blades failed to capitalise though as barely 10 minutes later Harry Souttar was dismissed for picking up two yellow cards - leaving the game finely poised heading into half-time.

It looked like neither side would make a breakthrough during the second period until Davies popped up with a smart finish in the 83rd minute.

His goal sealed the sort of win that is usually synonymous with promotion-winning teams and could prove to be a catalyst for the Blades to go on and build up some huge momentum over the festive period.

Sunderland remain in fourth after suffering their third league defeat of the campaign but are now without a win in six games - putting Regis Le Bris' side at a crossroads heading towards the halfway point of the season.

Burnley leapfrog Leeds

Another side hunting automatic promotion is Leeds United - although their hopes took a minor dent following a 1-0 defeat away at Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

Daniel Farke's side had been top of the league before Sheffield United's win and could have returned to the summit with a victory at Ewood Park.

Despite a staggering 72% possession and five attempts on goal, Leeds failed to capitalise against Rovers who took all three points thanks to Todd Cantwell's first-half penalty.

The Yorkshire club had been on a run of three consecutive wins and looked to be building momentum only to suffer their third defeat of the campaign - although they remain just one point outside of the automatic promotion spots.

Burnley also leapfrogged Leeds in the table after a solid win over Stoke with goals from Jay Rodriguez and Josh Brownhill.

The Clarets haven't quite set the league alight under Scott Parker but are certainly difficult to beat having conceded just six goals all season - if they can improve their efforts going forward then a top-two finish seems highly likely, although there's plenty of time still to go in what promises to be a hotly contested battle for a spot in the Premier League next season.

Ironically, it was Burnley's arch-rivals, Blackburn who allowed them to move into the automatic promotion spots!

Rooney's Plymouth in freefall

Down at the other end of the table, Wayne Rooney's Plymouth continued to struggle with another heavy defeat - this time a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Bristol City.

An Anis Mehmeti double between Scott Twine's opener and Sinclair Armstrong's late strike ensured the Robins came away with all three points in what turned out to be another embarrassing afternoon for Argyle.

Plymouth have now won just one game in the previous nine fixtures and have conceded a staggering 12 goals in their last three games, including six away at Norwich.

Despite appearing to turn a corner with good results against the likes of Sunderland, Blackburn and Luton, Argyle seem to be in freefall right now and can't stop conceding goals.

On the outside, it might look like another poor job from Rooney - and that wouldn't be wrong - but the club's issues go far deeper than just the manager.

Plymouth's squad wouldn't look out of place in League One barring the likes of Morgan Whittaker and Bali Mumba although even their top players have failed to produce this season.

The team has also been assembled on a tiny budget and desperately needs investment in January before it's too late.

Things look bleak for Rooney and his tenure is going exactly how plenty of outsiders had expected it to - although the club's struggles shouldn't solely be placed on the former Manchester United captain.

Bannan helps Wednesday to late win

Our Goal of the Week this time around goes to Barry Bannan, who scored a superb effort in Sheffield Wednesday's 2-1 comeback victory away at Derby.

The veteran midfielder picked up the ball outside the area and looped a stunning strike into the top corner, somehow evading both the reaching goalkeeper and a defender covering on the line.

Bannan's goal set Wednesday towards a hard-fought win, with Jamal Lowe sealing all three points after a 94th-minute winner.

Mehmeti shines for Bristol City

Anis Mehmeti put in an excellent showing in Bristol City's 4-0 win against Plymouth, netting two goals and providing one assist on his way to earning a 9.5 Flashscore player rating.

The midfielder was the highest-rated player over the weekend by some distance - making him our Player of the Week!
