The Championship returned last weekend after the final international break of the season to mark the start of a crucial stretch of fixtures that will decide the fates of all 24 teams in England's second tier.

With eight games to go, the battles for promotion, play-offs and to avoid relegation are in full swing with no team having a clear edge as the business end of the campaign draws near.

In the latest round of fixtures, Leeds dropped points in the final minute of a 2-2 draw against Swansea to dent their top-two hopes, while Luton picked up a shock 1-0 win against relegation rivals Hull to blow the fight for survival wide open.

Play-off hopefuls Coventry, West Brom and Bristol City all suffered defeats, opening the door for Middlesbrough to sneak back into the race after their 2-1 win over Oxford.

Meslier costs Leeds again

Leeds twice squandered a lead against Swansea on Saturday, drawing 2-2 at Elland Road against one of the few Championship clubs with little left to play for this season.

The draw means Leeds have now won just once in their last five fixtures and have undone all their hard work earlier in 2025 - there was a time just weeks ago that they looked destined for the Premier League following comeback victories over promotion rivals Sunderland and Sheffield United.

That's still entirely possible, but the Yorkshire club are making it far harder for themselves than it needs to be.

One of the key pitfalls of Daniel Farke's side this season has been the goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who was again at fault during last weekend's draw and, in truth, has cost them points on several occasions across the campaign.

The Frenchman actually started his afternoon well with a penalty save in the first half, but went on to drop the ball unchallenged at a corner for Harry Darling to tap home before letting an admittedly powerful shot go straight through him in the final minutes of added time.

Meslier's two mistakes cost Leeds two points and - not for the first time - left fans wondering just what it will take for the manager to change things between the sticks.

The goalkeeper is actively hampering Leeds' promotion push and the reality is that even if half of his errors were cut out, the team would likely be comfortably top of the table and en route to Premier League football.

A poor result was made even worse by the fact that Sheffield United passed a tricky test against Coventry with flying colours in a 3-1 win, while Burnley continued their strong form with a 1-0 triumph over Bristol City.

Promotion certainly isn't lost for Leeds, but they are hitting a poor run of form at the worst possible time and need to address their issues before it's too late.

Luton's bizarre winner at Hull

Down at the other end of the table, relegation-threatened Luton visited fellow strugglers Hull in a bid to shake up the fight for survival - and did just that with a 1-0 win.

The manner of their victory was perhaps one of the strangest you'll see all year, though, with the Hatters' only goal coming in the most bizarre circumstances.

Upon the start of the second half, the ball made its way back to the Hull penalty area with very little sense of danger as the Tigers' defenders looked to clear back up field - a couple of Luton players were pressing the issue but in reality there wasn't a great deal to even watch out for.

Sure enough, defender Lewie Coyle covered well and swept up with a big clearance, only to fire the ball straight into the face of teammate Alfie Jones from point-blank range.

What followed was surely the strangest own goal of the season, as the ball rebounded off Jones' face and into the back of his net to give Luton the lead.

That was the only goal of the match as the Hatters went on to secure a valuable three points - blowing the relegation battle wide open in the process.

No fewer than seven clubs are now fighting for survival, with just four points separating Luton in 23rd and Stoke in 18th.

Derby - on a run of three consecutive wins - have a chance to move out of the bottom three on Wednesday when they face Preston (a delayed fixture due to the latter's FA Cup appearance over the weekend).

Play-off hopefuls slip up

It was a weekend to forget for several of the Championship's play-off hopefuls after Coventry, West Brom and Bristol City all lost.

The Sky Blues were defeated 3-1 by an admittedly superior Sheffield United (who now sit top of the league), while Bristol City lost 1-0 to third-placed Burnley and the Baggies were beaten 1-0 in injury time by Norwich.

Those defeats opened the door for Middlesbrough to insert themselves back into the race after a 2-1 comeback victory against Oxford.

Goals from Kelechi Iheanacho and Neto Borges ensured Michael Carrick's side picked up a crucial three points, with Boro now on four wins from their last six games - hitting form at the perfect time.

With eight games still to go, it's shaping up to be a four-way race between the teams we've mentioned for two play-off spots.

Sunderland comfortably occupy fourth place, 13 points ahead of Coventry in fifth, while third spot will likely go to one of Leeds, Sheffield United or Burnley.

That leaves two spots to play for - currently filled by Coventry and West Brom - with just two points separating fifth and eight place in the table.

Things can change quickly in the Championship, though, so it's difficult to rule out anyone from 13th spot upwards with just six points between Millwall (13th) and West Brom (sixth).

Hamer haunts Coventry

Gustavo Hamer was the comfortable winner of this week's Goal of the Week after netting an excellent free-kick against former club Coventry.

The midfielder curled in a superb effort from over 25 yards out, finding the top corner to open the scoring in Sheffield United's 3-1 win.

Hamer's strike set the Blades on their way to a commanding victory against one of the in-form teams in the division, moving top of the league in the process.
