The Championship season is nearing its halfway point after the latest round of fixtures that featured some surprise results across the division.

Coventry got back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Bristol City, while fellow promotion candidates Middlesbrough maintained their winning run with a 3-1 triumph over QPR.

Elsewhere, inconsistency reared its head again for play-off chasers Southampton and Ipswich after both suffered surprise defeats.

Here, Flashscore takes a look at all the major talking points from the latest round of Championship action.

Controversial goal sinks Southampton

Southampton suffered a shock 2-1 defeat away at Norwich on Saturday, with Jovon Makama netting both goals for the Canaries.

The result came as a surprise, firstly because of Norwich's awful performances throughout the campaign, with the club 23rd in the table and three points from safety.

The Saints had also been on a good run themselves after winning six of their last seven matches before the trip to Carrow Road.

It seems appropriate, then, that their clash with Norwich was decided by a major controversy.

Makama's winner appeared to be a case of right place, right time as he turned the ball in from close range.

Even the match officials saw nothing wrong with the move despite serious complaints from the Southampton defenders.

On closer inspection, the Saints players had every right to be furious - replays showed Makama handled the ball into the net.

It's hard to tell whether the action was intentional or not, but Norwich won't care after securing a valuable three points in their battle to survive in the second tier.

Southampton will equally be frustrated with themselves, having missed a penalty earlier in the match when the score was 0-0 - although their strong form under new manager Tonda Eckert means it's unlikely they will be derailed too heavily by the disappointing result.

Preston continue surprise form

Preston have been one of the many surprise packages in the Championship this season, and their recent form has seen a rise all the way to third in the table.

North End have lost just once in their last 10 games and picked up another three points last weekend with a 2-1 win against Oxford.

Jordan Storey and Daniel Jebbison grabbed the goals in that clash, but several individuals have excelled for Preston throughout the campaign.

A core of exciting young talents, including Jebbison, Alfie Devine, Thierry Small and Lewis Dobbin, have all contributed to a memorable season thus far.

Three of those are on loan from the Premier League, but if Preston can keep hold of them past January, nothing is stopping Paul Heckingbottom's side from maintaining their play-off push.

Multiple experienced heads across the squad also play their part, namely Storey, goalkeeper Daniel Iversen and captain Ben Whiteman.

That squad makeup, coupled with a top manager in Heckingbottom, makes for an exciting few months ahead for North End fans.

Portsmouth grab vital victory

Portsmouth have struggled in the Championship this season, regressing after a promising return to the second tier last term.

Their form had seen them win just once in their last 10 games before the latest round of fixtures, stuck in the relegation zone.

Manager John Mousinho was handed a lifeline over the weekend, though, after his side picked up a 2-1 win against fellow relegation rivals Blackburn.

Callum Lang and Ibane Bowat cancelled out Yuki Ohashi's opener to seal a crucial comeback for Portsmouth, who would have stayed in the bottom three had they lost.

The victory tightens things up at the bottom of the table, with just six points separating Norwich in 23rd and Sheffield United in 18th - setting up an exciting second half of the campaign.

Fatawu nets from his own half

This round's Goal of the Week was decided pretty quickly, with Leicester winger Abdul Fatawu netting from inside his own half as the Foxes beat Ipswich 3-1.

The winger first nutmegged an opposition player before spotting the Ipswich goalkeeper off his line and firing home an audacious effort from 65 yards out - the longest-range goal in Championship history, since Opta started recording that type of data.

Storey our Player of the Week

As mentioned earlier, Preston defender Storey netted in their win over Oxford, helping his side rise to third in the table.

The Englishman played a vital role in both boxes, also making 14 clearances and winning 11 duels, earning a 9.0 Flashscore player rating.
