The race for promotion from the Championship continued over the weekend with Sheffield United and Burnley dropping points while Leeds and Sunderland gained ground with important wins.

At the other end of the table, Portsmouth and QPR picked up crucial victories in their push for survival.

Games were affected up and down the country due to adverse weather conditions as Storm Darragh caused chaos across the Championship fixtures, with two matches postponed.

In our regular feature, Flashscore has taken a look at all the major talking points from the weekend's Championship action.

Leeds and Sunderland gain ground on Burnley and Sheffield United

The promotion picture in the Championship is ever-changing, but only by the smallest of margins with just three points separating first and fourth (and eight points between first and sixth place).

That gap closed over the weekend after wins for Sunderland and Leeds as the Black Cats came from behind to beat Stoke 2-1 and the Yorkshire club triumphed 2-0 against Derby.

Elsewhere, Burnley could only draw 1-1 with Middlesbrough and Sheffield United were held 2-2 by West Brom.

Leeds' win initially put them top of the league after goals from defenders Joe Rodon and Max Wober - although Sheffield United returned to the summit after their draw on Sunday.

Quickfire goals from Callum O'Hare and Tyrese Campbell saw the Blades race into a 2-1 lead after Torbjorn Heggem's opener for West Brom, only for Tom Fellows to net a somewhat fortunate deflected goal during the second half to see the points shared at the Hawthornes.

Interestingly, the result now means the Baggies have drawn 10 of their last 11 games (one win).

Burnley missed their chance to go top of the league on Friday evening after drawing with high-flying Middlesbrough - with Connor Roberts scoring a bizarre yet brilliant long-range effort to cancel out Anfernee Dijksteel's goal earlier in the half.

As a side note, Middlesbrough look like dark horses for a promotion push in the coming weeks, particularly if they can cope with the busy festive schedule. Michael Carrick's side have scored an astounding 19 goals in their last six games.

Lastly, Sunderland kept within touching distance of the top two after their hard-fought win over Stoke, with 18-year-old Tom Watson scoring his first two senior goals.

The Black Cats had been on a run of six games without a win but hadn't slipped away from the other three sides like many might have expected, highlighting how tight this year's promotion race will be.

Leeds and Sheffield United still look like the favourites for a top-two spot but both Burnley and Sunderland are chasing closely behind - it's hard not to feel that the winter transfer window could be a deciding factor in the race for a Premier League spot next season.

Storm Darragh postpones Wayne Rooney's latest Plymouth clash

Storm Darragh caused plenty of issues in the UK over the weekend, with all football in Wales being postponed and even the Premier League's Merseyside derby getting cancelled just hours before the scheduled kick-off.

That also reached down to the Championship with Cardiff v Watford and Plymouth v Oxford getting called off - in what could be a potentially helpful turn of events for Argyle manager Wayne Rooney.

Manchester United's record goalscorer has been under huge pressure on the south coast, with his side languishing in the relegation zone.

If reports are to be believed, Rooney is edging closer to losing his job by the week and a postponement could allow him more time to get his side sorted for a busy festive period.

Cardiff are similarly struggling at the bottom end of the table and sit outside the bottom three on goal difference.

They recently hired interim manager Omer Riza on a permanent basis in a bid to continue their ascent up the league - with the coach overseeing an upturn in form since taking on the managerial role.

Huge wins for Portsmouth and QPR

Fellow relegation strugglers Portsmouth and QPR both picked up important wins over the weekend, with both clubs winning their respective fixtures 3-0.

Portsmouth cruised to victory against Bristol City after goals from Colby Bishop, Josh Murphy and Callum Lang.

A particular highlight was Bishop's opener, with the striker netting his second goal since returning from heart surgery during preseason.

The forward's form since returning is all the more impressive seeing as he wasn't even registered for the first part of the campaign - but his comeback has been much-welcomed by Portsmouth fans.

QPR also picked up a crucial win after thrashing play-off contenders Norwich 3-0 in their first home victory of the league season.

Youngster Rayan Kolli bagged a brace after Jimmy Dunne's opener as the London club recorded a surprisingly big victory against one of the league's best attacking sides.

Marti Cifuentes' team is now four games unbeaten and starting to show some of the form from the last half of the previous campaign - looking in good shape to push back up the league in the coming weeks.

Roberts' strike saves Burnley

We alluded to Connor Roberts' bizarre yet brilliant goal in Burnley's draw with Middlesbrough earlier, with the strike also winning our 'Goal of the Week'

The defender received the ball outside the area before driving forward and firing an unorthodox effort over the goalkeeper and into the top corner.

Roberts' effort stood out over a weekend that lacked a decent number of high-quality goals, which is perhaps a testament to the horrible weather conditions across the country.

Watson's breakthrough performance

As mentioned earlier, 18-year-old Sunderland winger Watson netted twice in their win over Stoke and had he had a little more luck on his side, could have bagged three or four goals in total.

The youngster hit the post and managed to fire over the bar from barely six yards out while also scoring the equaliser and the winner - earning a 9.2 Flashscore rating.

His performance was the highest rated of any player in the Championship over the weekend, making him our Player of the Week. Take a look at the full XI of best performers based on our player ratings system:
