The Championship promotion race is hotting up as all four teams in the mix dropped crucial points while there were some key results in the ongoing relegation battle.

The biggest match of the weekend saw Burnley draw 0-0 with league leaders Leeds - in hindsight, a result that really didn't surprise anyone.

Sheffield United suffered a shock 3-0 defeat against Hull while Sunderland conceded a 90th-minute equaliser in their 2-2 draw with bottom-of-the-table Plymouth.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth suffered two losses in the space of four days and Luton continued their drop down the table with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Millwall.

As always, Flashscore have taken a look at all the major talking points in our Championship round-up:

Promotion race takes a turn

The Championship promotion race is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory with four clubs all vying for a spot in the top two, although every team dropped points over the weekend.

Sheffield United currently sit second in the table and on paper should have recorded a straightforward win against struggling Hull, but fell to a shocking 3-0 defeat - just their second loss at home in the league this season.

Goals from Matt Crooks and Matty Jacob followed by an unfortunate own goal by Harrison Burrows ensured the Blades took a step backward in their quest for an immediate return to the Premier League and the defeat will sting just that little bit more after all three of their promotion rivals dropped points, with United failing to capitalise on a chance to go top of the table.

While defeat to Hull - who have been largely poor for the entire campaign - is majorly disappointing, Sunderland perhaps took it one further with their 2-2 draw against Plymouth.

Now, a draw is obviously better than a defeat. However, when you consider that Argyle had only picked up three points away from home all season and are the worst team in the division on their travels, anything other than a win is almost unacceptable.

What's even worse is leading the match 2-1 heading into stoppage time only to concede a cheap equaliser and squander a serious opportunity to heap pressure on the teams above.

Sunderland have picked up just one point across two games with Plymouth this season and have dropped several points from goals conceded after the 80-minute mark - something that must be addressed if promotion is to be achieved.

Finally, league leaders Leeds drew 0-0 away at Burnley in a game that truly failed to live up to the usual hype of a clash between two of the top teams in the division.

There was one singular shot on target in the entire match and the encounter eventually ended with a result that suited both teams quite well - neither side could afford to lose, and neither side did.

It was a weekend of missed opportunities for the top four teams in the Championship but all clubs will take solace in the fact that no real ground was gained or lost anywhere.

Portsmouth edge closer to drop zone

Portsmouth have so far had a mixed return to life in the second tier as the south coast side look to avoid relegation back to League One.

Their hopes took a bit of a dent in the last few days with a heavy 5-1 defeat to West Brom before a narrow 1-0 loss to Millwall.

The thrashing against West Brom particularly stands out as the sort of result that can seriously ruin a team's momentum and dash the confidence of several players.

Add to that a battling but ultimately unsuccessful match against Millwall and Portsmouth now find themselves looking worriedly over their shoulder at the relegation zone below.

John Mousinho's side are just two points above the bottom three and now face a serious test of their character in the weeks ahead - bouncing back from two disappointing defeats will be tricky but certainly isn't impossible.

Portsmouth have already shown signs of life after a really poor start to the campaign and the return of striker Colby Bishop has coincided with the team posing a far bigger goal threat, so they can't be counted out amid a very tight relegation fight.

The likes of Plymouth, Derby, Luton and Stoke are all in the mix to go down and the fight for survival is shaping up to be just as exciting as the battle for promotion.

Coventry making a charge with Lampard

The appointment of Frank Lampard at Coventry raised a few eyebrows, particularly given he was replacing popular figure Mark Robins, but the Englishman has been a pleasant surprise so far.

After a mixed bag of initial results, the Sky Blues are now on a four-game winning streak in all competitions and look well-placed for a late charge towards the play-offs - a common theme of recent seasons.

Their latest victory came against fellow top-six contenders Watford with Lampard's side pulling off an admirable 2-1 win.

A brace from Victor Torp - including a stunning free-kick - helped Coventry to another important three points and the Sky Blues are now starting to look up rather than down with regards to the table.

Also important is that the good run of form has eased any doubts over Lampard's appointment as the Englishman continues to prove that he is perhaps a fair bit better than many give him credit for.

Their squad is also full of promise, with Torp among several players who are capable of making a real difference in the Championship.

Oliver Dovin, Ephron Mason-Clark, Jack Rudoni, Milan van Ewijk and Ben Sheaf present a solid base of players to build the team around while forward Haji Wright - currently out injured - would add a lot more goals to the side upon his return.

Coventry have taken their time but finally look to be mounting the play-off push many had expected of them before the season began.

Ivanovic scores a screamer

Millwall signed Mihailo Ivanovic as a relative unknown in the summer transfer window and after a few months of settling in, the forward appears to be a real coup for the London club.

Ivanovic netted his fourth of the season in Millwall's 1-0 win against Luton (and then his fifth days later against Portsmouth).

We'll focus on his strike against Luton for our Goal of the Week - a spectacular volley from outside the penalty area that proved to be decisive in a crucial win for the Lions.

Diangana shines for West Brom

We touched on the Baggies' 5-1 thrashing of Portsmouth earlier and one of the cornerstones of that performance was Grady Diangana.

The forward grabbed two goals and two assists in one of the best individual performances of the season - earning a perfect 10 Flashscore player rating.

That was the highest rating of any player over the weekend by some margin, making Diangana our Player of the Week!
