A busy winter period is approaching for the 24 clubs in the Championship and it's time ot take stock of the season so far before everything starts to get a bit mad in the relentless flurry of upcoming fixtures.

Here, instead of our usual round-up of the week's action, Flashscore looks at the promotion race, who is in the play-off picture and the sides at risk of relegation.

We'll also examine to goalscoring charts as well as the Golden Glove race.

Coventry making Premier League charge

Granted, we're slightly short of the halfway point of the campaign with 18 matches played, but Coventry already look a pretty safe bet for promotion and even the title.

The Sky Blues sit 10 points clear at the top of the table and have scored a staggering 50 goals - averaging just shy of three goals per game.

Frank Lampard's side suffered play-off heartache last term but have immediately bounced back and are on course for a record-breaking season that could easily end with promotion to the Premier League.

Following not so closely behind are Middlesbrough, who occupy the second automatic promotion spot but aren't too far ahead of the chasing pack behind them.

Their campaign has hit some turbulence in recent weeks after the departure of manager Rob Edwards, but Boro are still holding their own under new coach Kim Hellberg.

In the previously mentioned chasing pack, Millwall, Stoke and Preston are within three points or fewer of second spot.

None of the three clubs were among the promotion favourites heading into the season, but all of them have a real shot at the automatic spots if they can keep their strong form going over the busy winter period.

Play-off race wide open

As always, the play-off race is wide open with just six points separating sixth and 17th place in the table.

That might seem like a big gap, but in the Championship, with the fixtures coming in fast, that difference can be eliminated in the space of a week or two.

Bristol City currently occupy sixth place on 29 points - although Ipswich, Birmingham and Hull are immediately behind them on 28.

A host of clubs then follow on 26, 25 and 24 points before reaching Charlton down in 17th on 23 points.

Plenty of those in the middle of the table have their own issues to sort out before thinking about pushing further up the league - namely, consistent performances - but a few look like good bets heading into the winter.

Birmingham are in form, having lost just once in their last six, and boast an incredibly deep squad full of top players for the level.

Likewise, Ipswich have plenty of exceptional Championship players in their side and are looking upwards after a wobbly start to the season - they seem the play-off favourites if they can find some more consistency in their performances.

Fellow relegated clubs Southampton and Leicester have struggled significantly more, but it would be hard to completely rule either out, given the quality of players in their squads - although the Foxes are in a downward spiral and would need significant changes to turn themselves into top six contenders.

Wrexham are potential dark horses as a team that is very difficult to beat. Phil Parkinson's side have only lost four times in the league and could push further up the table if they start to turn some draws into wins - something that could be aided by some strong January transfer business.

Huge clubs at risk of relegation

At the other end of the table, some huge clubs are at risk of relegation to League One.

Sheffield Wednesday are all but down after receiving two points deductions and winning just one game all season. The Owls are bottom of the league with minus 10, a total of 27 points from safety.

Norwich are equally struggling and, until recently, had been on a run of 13 games without a win - a run that ended by beating QPR 3-1 last weekend.

The Canaries definitely have the individual quality to fire them to safety over the coming months, with Josh Sargent a top striker for the second tier, but the American is currently on a streak of 14 matches without a goal.

New manager Philippe Clement will have his work cut out for him after inheriting a squad with no momentum and some key players out of form.

Portsmouth, Swansea and Oxford are narrowly ahead of Norwich, but all three have struggled across the season so far.

The Swans in particular are stuck in a terrible run of form, having lost their last five games, while Pompey have just one win in their last nine.

Things are looking a bit better for Oxford, who have only lost twice in their previous seven, and have an astute manager in Gary Rowett, who is experienced in keeping teams in the Championship.

Thomas-Asante leads the scoring charts

Coventry striker Brandon Thomas-Asante has benefitted from his side's exceptional form and tops the Championship's scoring charts with 10 goals.

He is joined by Derby's Carlton Morris (also on 10), but the Englishman is set to be out until at least March and potentially the end of the season with a knee injury.

Hull forward Joe Gelhardt has also impressed and has nine for the campaign, while Birmingham talisman Jay Stansfield is tied with Coventry winger Haji Wright on eight each.

The Sky Blues have a further two representatives on seven goals in Ellis Simms and Victor Torp - alongside them is exceptional Championship goalscorer Adam Armstrong, who plays for Southampton.

It would be hard not to back Thomas-Asante (or any of the other Coventry forwards) to win the Golden Boot come the end of the campaign.

Lampard's side are scoring goals at an extraordinary rate and, while it's difficult to maintain, they've shown no signs yet of slowing down.

Johansson in the hunt for the Golden Glove

Three goalkeepers lead the chase for the Golden Glove, with Stoke's Viktor Johansson, Coventry's Carl Rushworth and Bristol City's Radek Vitek all tied on seven clean sheets.

All three are exceptional shot stoppers, but Johansson has long been regarded as one of the best in the division and is putting up strong numbers for a Stoke side that has the fewest goals conceded in the league.

Vitek joined Bristol City on loan from Manchester United in the summer and has been superb since arriving - and Rushworth has been part of a consistent Coventry defensive unit that has laid the foundations for their brilliant campaign thus far.
