Another weekend of Championship action has passed with several major results in both the race for promotion and the fight to avoid relegation.

In the promotion picture, Leeds dropped points with a 1-1 draw away at Preston while Sheffield United ground out a 2-0 win against Plymouth.

Sunderland produced a 3-2 victory against Swansea despite being 2-0 down after 20 minutes and Burnley came from behind to defeat Norwich 2-1.

At the other end of the table, Frank Lampard's Coventry battled back to beat bottom-of-the-league Hull and Portsmouth suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Derby.

As always, Flashscore has taken a look at all the major talking points from the weekend's action.

Sunderland fight back at Swansea

Sunderland started the 2024/25 season with a flurry of wins to see them to the top of the league but had since dropped off with just one victory in eight games - although that only saw a five-point gap open between themselves in fourth and Sheffield United in first.

It looked like another flat afternoon for the Black Cats after they went 2-0 down inside 20 minutes away at Swansea, with supporters starting to think that maybe they were watching a play-off chasing side rather than a top-two contender.

Zan Vipotnik opened the scoring after capitalising on a comical defensive error - with the ball falling to him in the box completely unchallenged despite three defenders and goalkeeper Anthony Patterson standing within a couple of yards of the striker - before Liam Cullen doubled the Swans' lead with a stunning freekick.

Sunderland had, until that point, failed to lay a glove on their opponents but got a lifeline as Dan Ballard turned home a diving header just before the half-hour mark.

Manager Regis Le Bris must have had some choice words for his players at half-time after a poor performance as the Black Cats came out for the second half looking like a completely new side, with captain Dan Neil spearheading a superb comeback.

The midfielder bossed the game for the final 45 minutes and netted the equaliser with a superb strike from distance after driving through the middle of the pitch.

Jobe Bellingham then scored the winner just two minutes later, crashing into the box to convert from close range after some good work from fellow youngster Chris Rigg - sending the travelling supporters wild behind the goal.

Sunderland then comfortably held out for the remaining 20 minutes or so to seal what could turn out to be a pivotal result in their push for promotion to the Premier League, particularly with rivals Leeds dropping points earlier on Saturday.

Things haven't been perfect of late for Le Bris' side but the comeback against Swansea could provide some real momentum going forward.

Blackburn's hot streak continues

One side perhaps going under the radar in the Championship is Blackburn Rovers, who have won six games in a row while only conceding one goal.

The former Premier League champions have pushed right up the table and find themselves just five points outside of the top two with a game in hand.

Rovers' latest victory came in the form of a 2-0 triumph against strugglers Luton.

Quickfire goals from Premier League loanees Amario Cozier-Duberry and Owen Beck sealed a routine win at Ewood Park, made even easier once Luton's Liam Walsh was sent off just 11 minutes after being subbed on in the second half.

What makes Blackburn's rise up the table admirable is the fact that many had predicted them to struggle at the bottom of the division before the season began.

Last year's top scorer (both for the club and the entire league) Sammie Szmodics was sold in the summer and relatively unknown names were brought in to replace him in Yuki Ohashi and Makhtar Gueye.

Those two additions were supplemented with the likes of Cozier-Dubbery and Todd Cantwell to form a solid attacking unit - but Rovers' main contributor to the recent run of wins is their defence.

Veteran defender Danny Batth partnered with Dominic Hyam has seen a run of five clean sheets in a row while goalkeeper Aynsley Pears has been a constant standout with several top saves in recent weeks.

Couple that with solid fullback options in Callum Brittain, Joe Rankin-Costelloe, Beck and Harry Pickering - as well as a strong midfield base formed by Lewis Travis and Sondre Tronstad - and Rovers look well-placed for at least a play-off finish.

Blackburn's good fortunes have been overseen by manager John Eustace, who deserves an immense amount of credit for the job done so far.

Flemming scores a screamer

Burnley's promotion chase continued on Sunday with a solid 2-1 comeback victory against Norwich as Dutchman Zian Flemming stole the show with a magnificent strike.

The forward was allowed to bring the ball forward following what seemed like a 'nothing' freekick and take aim before smashing the ball into the top corner from 30 yards out.

Swansea's Cullen is perhaps hard done by after his freekick but Flemming's strike will be up there with the best scored in the entire division all season - winning our Goal of the Week!

Cashin stars as Derby thrash Portsmouth

Flashscore's Championship Player of the Week for the past weekend by a fair margin was Derby defender Eiran Cashin, who found the net in their 4-0 win over Portsmouth before being substituted near the hour mark.

The Irishman also helped his side to a valuable clean sheet as the Rams continued their solid return back to life in England's second tier.

The victory ended Derby's run of six games without a win and earned Cashin an 8.9 rating - the highest of any player over the weekend.
