Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has been charged by the FA after he kicked a ball at a Sheffield United fan.

The 58-year-old was sent off after the half-time whistle in the home defeat by Southampton after he ruthlessly kicked a ball which hit one of the club’s own fans in the stand.

He immediately went over to apologise before returning to the tunnel, where he was shown a red card for his actions. This forced him to watch the second half from the stands as his side were defeated 2-1 by Southampton

Wilder has now been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after he said he would appeal against any touchline ban for the red card. He will have until Wednesday, October 8th to respond to the charge.

He confirmed his decision to challenge a possible charge last week as videos of the incident circulated on social media.

"If I approached the referee at half-time and had a right pop at him, if I picked the ball out my hands and booted it at him or at the fourth official, then I would expect the necessary punishment and I won't appeal.

"But I will appeal because, as you've seen, I've nonchalantly knocked it back - it's got a bit of a flier on it.

"I've gone straight into the stand, I've apologised to the guy, everything's all sorted and I've turned around and got a red card put in my face."

His side are bottom of the Championship after their 1-0 loss to Hull City away from home at the weekend.

If Wilder’s appeal is unsuccessful, the club could be without their manager for the next game, in what would be a huge blow as relegation looms for the Blades so early in the season.
