Atletico Madrid progressed to the last four of the Copa Del Rey courtesy of a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Getafe at the Estadio Metropolitano, leaving the Azulones without a win against Atleti in their previous 27 H2Hs.

Domestically, Atletico have been defensively solid as ever this term, conceding a LaLiga low 14 goals after 22 matches and shipping just once on their run to the quarter-finals of this competition.

However, it was their attacking prowess that shone through here during what must be one of the most one-sided first halves of the season.

The hosts were dominant from the word go and were ahead inside 10 minutes when Giuliano Simeone headed Javi Galán’s cross into the corner.

By the midway point of the opening period, they were two to the good, with Simeone again the goalscorer as he slotted past Jiri Letacek following an incisive Atleti move.

Only a combination of last-gasp defending from Juan Iglesias and a fingertip Letacek save prevented Samuel Lino from extending the advantage further, while Julián Alvarez shot over the bar when one-on-one with the Getafe goalkeeper.

Eventually, though, Atleti did find the back of the net once more as Lino found the bottom corner from inside the area. In response, Getafe just could not get to grips with their opponents and were barely a threat offensively, although Christantus Uche did waste a fantastic opportunity to reduce the deficit on the brink of the interval when he fired past the post.

An offside flag denied Simeone his hat-trick within minutes of the restart, but in truth, the second period was something of a damp squib. Getafe were far more involved, yet they were unable to exert any real pressure, even if Juan Musso was forced into a couple of comfortable saves.

The damage had already been done, allowing Giuliano’s dad and manager Diego to make substitutes and rest some of his key players. Still, there were two late goals for the home fans to cheer when replacement Angel Correa drilled past Letacek from outside the box and fellow sub Alexander Sørloth did the same not long after.

All in all, Atletico could hardly have hoped for an easier night at the office and will continue their quest for silverware as they impress on all three fronts - their clash with city rivals Real Madrid at the weekend promises to be far more challenging than this though.

Getafe, meanwhile, are left to lick their wounds after being outclassed, but their six-game winning run that ended here is something to hold onto.
