Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has spoken to the media ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea.

The Blues eliminated Cardiff City from the quarter-finals of the competition, whilst the Gunners needed penalties to knock out Crystal Palace with the final goal coming from William Saliba.

Arteta knows how close Arsenal are to silverware

Arsenal made it eight wins from their last nine games in all tournaments on Sunday as they beat Portsmouth in the FA Cup. Arteta’s side will aim to keep up that momentum as he first spoke on the semi-final and talk around having to win the domestic cups.

“I understand that (having to win cup competitions) but there is a lot of 'have tos'. We will try to beat those!

“Yes football gives you another chance, we've been so consistent in the competition. Now we have to knock another big team out.

“It (the semi-final) gives you the sense that the objective is very close!”

The Spanish boss also commented on team news, giving small updates on a number of players. The first piece came on striker Kai Havertz: "We have to manage his minutes now but he had a block of 20 minutes here and there."

On Piero Hincapié: "He's progressing but I don't know. It might be a few weeks but we don't know exactly when."

Arteta waves goodbye to Mertesacker

Finally, Arteta was asked about Per Mertesacker, the club’s Academy Manager, who confirmed he will leave Arsenal at the end of the season after eight years in the role. The news came as a shock to many and the German stated that "Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me, so this was a difficult decision."

Arteta waved goodbye to his former teammate and thanked him for his commitment to the club for so many years.

"It's been 15 years at the club. We were teammates, we were friends, we were captains together. We shared this incredible project together in a different role.

"Him as an academy director and me as a manager. I enjoy every minute of it. I think it's someone that transmits the values of this football club.

"It's ambition and everything that is related to it in the best manner. Very thankful. We had a great time together.

"For sure as well he's made that decision. I wish him the best of luck for the next chapter because I'm sure it's going to be a success."
