The EFL Cup final between Liverpool and Newcastle takes place on Sunday, with both teams confident they can come away with the first bit of silverware on offer in England this season. Liverpool are the reigning champions, having beaten Chelsea in last year's final and head into this final at the top of the Premier League.
For their opponents, Newcastle, this is the second final in three years in the EFL Cup, losing to Manchester United in the 2022/23 edition. The Magpies will be hoping they can go one better this time and end a domestic trophy drought that has hung over the team since 1955 when they won the FA Cup.

Liverpool team news
Liverpool potentially lost two key players during Tuesday night’s loss to PSG in the Champions League. Trent Alexander-Arnold went down with what looked like an ankle injury in the second half and was replaced by Jarell Quansah before Ibrahima Konate was substituted in the second half of extra time, limping off the pitch.
Head coach Arne Slot said after the game that he expects Alexander-Arnold to miss Sunday’s Carabao Cup final but is optimistic that Konate will be fit enough to start. Long term injuries to Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez will see that defensive duo missing on the weekend also.

Head-to-Head record
Liverpool are unbeaten against Newcastle in their last 17 meetings, stretching back almost 10 years. The last time Newcastle beat Liverpool was on December 6, 2015, when a Martin Skrtel own goal and Georginio Wijnaldum 93rd minute clincher saw the Magpies win 2-0. In the 17 games that have followed, Newcastle have managed only five draws, losing the other 12.
The two teams met only a few weeks ago when Liverpool were 2-0 winners, albeit against a depleted Newcastle side that did not include Alexander Isak or Joelinton. Since that game, Liverpool have won two and lost one in all competitions, whereas Newcastle lost on penalties to Brighton in the FA Cup and beat West Ham in the Premier League.
