It took him a lot of work to find a new deal before he could leave Liverpool, but, for Vitezslav Jaros, his first national team call-up is confirmation that his on-loan stint at Sturm Graz was a step in the right direction.

Not only that, the Czech goalkeeper spoke about it at a national team press conference, which, under the guidance of new coach Ivan Hasek, he's preparing for the preparatory matches in Norway and with Armenia.

He was pleasantly surprised by the call, but Jaros already had some hints beforehand. "I was in contact with (goalkeeping coach) Radek Cerny, they came to watch my games. I knew I was in the wider circle, so I'm obviously very happy to be nominated," he said after Tuesday's training session.

He was among the five juniors involved in initiation-style rituals. "You stand in the circle and introduce yourself. But we're not all there yet, some of us are yet to do it. There's always nervousness before the first (meeting), you're coming into a new (group).

"Plus, I've never (played at a senior level) in the Czech Republic, so it's even more different for me than for others. But the group is great, I believe that everyone will fit in without any problems," described the native of Pribram.

Sturm were knocked out by Lille in the eighth round of the Europa Conference League last week are currently second in the Austrian top flight, two points behind Salzburg. "I'm happy, I didn't play at the beginning of the season. I was at Liverpool and something went wrong, there was no adequate (chance to play). Then only in January, to a team where I have guaranteed minutes, we play cups and for the title."

He has already had three loan spells within the UK and Ireland, so this is his first time outside of familiar surroundings. "It's difficult to find (chances to play) abroad and in central Europe without an option. It was for six months, the plan was for a longer period. It's the right move, it opened the door for me to the national team as well. Moreover, I am still in contact with Liverpool. After every game I call with the goalkeeping coach, they are still watching me. They say they like (the deal)," pointed out the goalkeeper, who has been speculated about a possible move to Slavia Prague. "Personally, I don't quite know how close it was for me. It was handled by my agency, I don't want to spread any rumours."

For now, his position in Liverpool's goalkeeping hierarchy is still crucial. "I don't know where I am now, but they told me it would be good to leave and start (playing). We'll see in the summer who stays. It's great to train with Alisson, who is world-class. Against Sparta everyone saw (Caoimhin) Kelleher too."

It was only from the newspapers that he found out Jurgen Klopp will leave Anfield at the end of the season by his own decision. "It's a shock for everybody. He has four more years on his contract, rarely does a coach end it himself in this situation. We'll see what happens after he leaves."

First training session under Hasek

Jaros met another former U21 goalkeeper, Matej Kovar. Both of them went to the UK when they were youngsters. "I would definitely recommend such a move to everyone. If it doesn't work out, you can say you at least tried. And if you do, the door is open almost everywhere."

Speaking about his potential senior Czech debut, he said: "If I could get on the pitch for a while, it would be a dream come true - who wouldn't want to? But it all depends on the coach, we have to show up at training." The experienced Jindrich Stanek is likely to be preferred against Norway.
