Live updates

23:24 BST - That's it this evening, thanks for joining us. Make sure to come back on Saturday for what promises to be more drama in the final of Euro 2025. Who will England face, Spain or Germany? We'll find out tomorrow. See you soon!

23:18 BST - And finally a word from England boss Sarina Wiegman, who told ITV Sport:

"Relief - when you score so late in normal time, and extra time, then a penalty we score on the rebound.

"We had some serious challenges. In the first half, we didn't play well; in the second half, we did better.

"They defended really well, too, a lot of blocks, really aggressive and winning lots of duels.

"We never give up - we can win by any means. This team just keeps going."

23:12 BST - The woman of the moment, Michelle Agyemang, was typically modest in her post-match interview despite how big of an influence she had on tonight's result.

"I'm so proud of the team's fight and the effort," she told ITV Sport.

"We were down for over 90 minutes, so to show that character and that fight... I said it at the last game and I'm saying it again; it's the character and the strength of this team that has put us this far."

23:06 BST - Tonight's drama perfectly summed up by Lucy Bronze, who told ITV Sport:

"We don't do things the easy way it seems this tournament, but we find a way to win."

22:55 BST - Chloe Kelly may have scored the goal that sent England into Saturday's final, but she was full of praise for the contribution of Michelle Agyemang.

"She's unbelievable. She should have scored again when she hit the cross bar," Kelly told ITV Sport.

"She's got the world at her feet. A young player with a bright future. I'm absolutely buzzing for her.

"This team shows resilience but we fight back and hopefully we can make it easier for ourselves, we don't need that panic."

22:51 BST - Can this group go one step further on Saturday?

22:45 BST - This will be England's second successive Euros final and their third final of a major tournament in three years. It's an incredible feat from Sarina Wiegman and her players.

22:39 BST - FULL-TIME! That's the end of the match and England have booked their place in the final of Euro 2025! What drama. There was an early goal from Italy and then the Italians appeared set to hold out through stubborn defence, but then Michelle Agyemang came along to turn the game around. With two minutes remaining, she scored an equaliser, and Chloe Kelly was the woman to put the ball in the back of the net in extra-time to keep England's dream of defending their Euros title alive.

22:33 BST - GOAL! Chloe Kelly has just about won it for England! The initial penalty was saved but she caught it on the rebound and now England are looking likely to play in the Euros final!

22:32 BST - Chloe Kelly is stepping up to take it.

22:30 BST - PENALTY! England will have a chance to win it! VAR is looking at a challenge by Emma Severini on Beth Mead, but there won't be anything to overturn it.

22:29 BST - CLOSE! OH SO CLOSE! Michelle Agyemang tries to chip the keeper but it hits the crossbar!

22:16 BST - And there's the whistle for the end of the first period of extra-time. We have 15 minutes to settle this if we don't want penalties!

22:09 BST - Italy are rattled as Chloe Kelly heads into the box and sends a big booming shot goalward, but the ball flies left of the goal. It's coming.

22:06 BST - There is chaos in the box and very nearly an own goal from Italy. As is always the case, and on this occasion it's England, it's the team that forced the equaliser that is bringing far more energy in extra-time.

22:02 BST - We are underway in extra-time. Can England carry that momentum and win this before we get to penalties?

21:56 BST - There's the full-time whistle and we will have extra time!

21:52 BST - GOAL! England have equalised! Huge drama with two minutes remaining! Michelle Agyemang gets the ball at her feet after some chaos in the box, and she slots it home by showing great nerve with the game so very nearly done.

21:47 BST - We have reached the end of the 90 minutes and England now have seven minutes of added time to find an equaliser.

21:43 BST - CLOSE! Oh my word, England have just survived two shots from close range. Hannah Hampton keeps her side in it for now, but it's on the other end of the pitch where they really need someone to step up.

21:41 BST - Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones come on for Alessia Russo and Leah Williamson.

21:37 BST - There are ten of the original 90 minutes remaining.

21:34 BST - Chloe Kelly comes onto the field in place of Georgia Stanway and Kelly is treated to a huge ovation. Can she make the difference here tonight?

21:23 BST - Cristiana Girelli receives some treatment and eventually leaves the field in tears after quite a lengthy delay.

21:08 BST CHANCE! Alessia Russo is unmarked and would have had a huge opportunity to score, but Lauren Hemp's header goes over the goal rather than finding her team-mate.

21:03 BST - Beth Mead has replaced Lauren James, who may have picked up a knock in the first half.

21:02 BST - And we are back on in Geneva. England have 45 minutes to keep their title defence alive.

20:47 BST - HALF-TIME: There's the break in Geneva and in truth England are the ones more relieved to hear the referee's whistle. They started the game more brightly than their opponents, but Italy have grown into this game and take a deserved lead into half-time. Over to you to pick up up the troops, Sarina Wiegman.

20:33 BST - GOAL! Italy have taken the lead against the run of play! Barbara Bonansea is the woman who gets the ball at close range and rifles it into the back of the net. Huge surprise - what can England do in response?

20:18 BST - The England fans all got up and applauded in unison in support of Jess Carter, who suffered racist abuse this week, in the 16th minute. A wonderful show of support from the crowd.

20:09 BST - The Lionesses are certainly looking the busier of the two teams out there - an opener for Sarina Wiegman's side seems inevitable.

20:00 BST - And we are off in Geneva!

19:58 BST - A pair of incredible anthems have set us up for a blockbuster clash.

19:51 BST - Players looking focussed.

19:34 BST - Sarina Wiegman has been speaking ahead of the game, and told ITV about the decision to bring in Esme Morgan ahead of Jess Carter: "The thinking behind that move is that we have tactical challenges today and we think with Esme we can solve that better."

19:28 BST - What do the numbers say?

Head-to-Head History

England have won seven of their last ten games in all competitions against Italy (D1, L2), with the last meeting in February 2024 ending in a comfortable 5-1 win, but Italy have actually won each of the two H2Hs at the Euros (1987 and 2009).
