Sweden continued their winning start to their UEFA Women’s European Championship campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Poland in Lucerne to advance to the knockout stages, stretching their unbeaten run to 14 matches in the process (W10, D4).

The Blagult, ranked sixth in the world, had begun their Group C campaign with a win over Denmark and knew another three points today would be enough for a Quarter-final berth.

Trying to stop them and remain alive in the tournament, Poland came into this competition facing an uphill battle in Group C, with the White and Reds having failed to avoid defeat in any of their last five meetings with teams ranked inside FIFA’s top 10, including an opening round loss to Germany.

The Scandinavian nation went close to taking an early lead when Kosovare Asllani’s header rattled the bar from close range. Poland did not heed that warning, though, as Sweden hit the bar again 10 minutes later through Madelen Janogy’s looping header.

Peter Gerhardsson’s side did eventually break the deadlock after 27 minutes, when Asllani’s pinpoint cross was steered into the corner from inside the six-yard box by the head of Stina Blackstenius.

Sweden squandered two golden opportunities to double their lead in the last few minutes of the first half, with Blackstenius denied by Poland goalkeeper Kinga Szemik before heading over from a fantastic position just a couple of minutes later.

The Swedes remained in complete control of the game in the opening stages of the second half and went on to double their lead seven minutes after HT. The goal came courtesy of Asllani, who emphatically headed Johanna Kaneryd’s cross home.

The three points were secured with around a quarter-hour remaining, when substitute Lina Hurtig nodded in Jonna Andersson’s corner.

The Blagult saw the game out from there to secure the 3-0 win and qualification to the knockout stages of the competition ahead of their group-deciding game against Germany on Saturday evening.

Poland, however, are staring down the barrel of marking their first ever EURO finals without amassing a single point.
