The 2025 Europa League has reached its final stage as Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United duke it out in Bilbao to see who will be crowned the UEFA Europa League Champion. Whilst the league form of both teams has been abysmal, in Europe, both United and Spurs have performed admirably to reach this stage.

And that is what makes this final all the more vital to both teams, as not only is a trophy on offer, but entry into UEFA’s premier competition too, as the winners take part in the 2025/26 edition of the Champions League. For the loser, the season will be viewed as a failure, with repercussions potentially felt throughout the squad and management levels.

Tottenham Hotspur team news

Ange Postecoglou’s team will be without influential midfielder James Maddison for the final. Unfortunately for the England player, he suffered a knee injury in the 3-1 Europa League semi-final first-leg win against Bodo/Glimt and is out for the rest of the season.

The misery of losing Maddison has also been compounded by Dejan Kulusevski hobbling off after 18 minutes against Crystal Palace following a heavy challenge from Marc Guehi. Postecoglou was hopeful that the Swede will be fit for the Europa League final, but last week it was announced that Kulusevski has had surgery on his knee and will be out for several months.

After their most recent game against Aston Villa, Pape Matar Sarr was taken off early in the second half and walked straight down the tunnel. After the game, Postecoglou said that the player felt something in his back but should be fit for Wednesday's final.

Lucas Bergvall will definitely be missing when the final comes about, with the midfield star being ruled out for the season after damaging his ankle ligaments during the last training session before the Europa League semifinal first leg. Radu Dragusin is a longer-term absentee and is recovering from ACL surgery.

Tottenham predicted lineup vs Manchester United, (4-3-3)

Vicario; Porro, Van de Ven, Romero, Spence; Bentancur, Bissouma, Sarr; Son, Johnson, Solanke.

Manchester United team news

With the final just around the corner, Ruben Amorim surely held his breath when he saw Leny Yoro limp off against West Ham. Amorim said after the game that Yoro "felt something, but it could be a small thing".

Diogo Dalot and Matthijs de Ligt are two players who could be fit enough to play the Europa League final, but they are both being assessed on a day-by-day basis. Dalot has not featured since the 1-0 loss to Wolves in April, and De Ligt since United’s 4-3 loss to Brentford at the start of May.

Lisandro Martinez and Joshua Zirkzee are both ruled out for the rest of the season, but Ayden Heaven was spotted training individually recently at Carrington. It is yet to be seen where he is in his recovery, as Amorim confirmed after he was seen that he still remains unavailable for selection.

Manchester United predicted lineup vs Tottenham, (3-4-3)

Head-to-head record

Ahead of the Europa League final, both United and Spurs lost on Friday against Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively. Both have had identically indifferent form, having only won in the two legs of the Europa League semifinals in their last five games. The mirroring goes even further with the same records in the Premier League, with five losses and one draw in their last six league games.

Form is nothing to go on then, but head-to-head, Tottenham Hotspur have won all three of the ties this season, starting with a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford in September in the league, before a 4-3 win in December in the Carabao Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. More recently, Spurs won 1-0 at home in February thanks to a goal from James Maddison.

Spurs have not lost to United since October 2022, when United won 2-0. Six games between the two since then have only seen United get a draw once.
