Ferencvaros remain unbeaten in this season’s UEFA Europa League (W3, D2) and in the top eight of the league phase after a very credible 1-1 draw at Fenerbahce.

In a game that took a while to warm up, Talisca registered the first shot on target on 17 minutes, but his shot from range was comfortably held by Ferencvaros goalkeeper Denes Dibusz, who then got down low to keep out two strikes from Marco Asensio.

However, it was the visitors who had the most presentable chance of the first half late on when Cebrail Makreckis’ long throw caused chaos in the Fenerbahce box, with Ferencvaros talisman Barnabas Varga capitalising on a poor touch from Archie Brown and nutmegging Yigit Efe Demir, only for Varga’s teammate Bamidele Yusuf to see his effort from just a couple of yards out somehow hit Ederson’s left-hand post and go wide.

Yusuf then still had time to hit the other post with a curler before half-time.

Just before the break, Ferencvaros defender Toon Raemaekers was perhaps lucky not to have at least been yellow-carded after appearing to kick out at Milan Skriniar while the Fenerbahce captain was on the ground following a corner.

Going into the second period, neither home head coach Domenico Tedesco nor his opposite number Robbie Keane made any substitutions, as Fenerbahce looked to continue to dominate possession, but with more cutting edge, so it was deeply frustrating for them when Youssef En-Nesyri nodded Asensio’s corner well wide while unmarked.

Tedesco, without three suspended players including former Manchester United midfielder Fred, did ultimately make a triple change at around the hour mark, with ex-Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran among those introduced as he replaced En-Nesyri.

A dramatic spell soon followed. Skriniar’s clumsy control was seized on by Yusuf, who forced a corner which was delivered by Gabi Kanichowsky and headed in by Varga.

Just as Ferencvaros were dreaming of a fourth successive away victory for the first time in the club’s history however, Fenerbahce equalised. The Turkish giants’ patient passing move culminated in substitute Dorgeles Nene setting up Talisca to slam home despite Dibusz’s best efforts, and a grandstand finish lay in store.

Nene almost provider a firecracker of a winner, rattling the crossbar, before Talisca kept Dibusz on his toes once more, but the points were ultimately shared as Duran was sent off late on for throwing his head towards Raemaekers in what was a fiery ending.

Fenerbahçe have now not lost any of their last 11 matches in all competitions (W8, D3) and find themselves in mid-table in the UEL ahead of a trip to Brann next month, while Ferencvaros next host Rangers in the competition.
