Chelsea will meet Benfica in the last 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Chelsea managed to finish the group stage well after suffering a humbling 3-1 defeat against Flamengo in their second group game. The ship was steadied with a 3-0 victory over Esperance Tunis, which meant they finished second in their group and were handed this tie against fellow European side Benfica.

Benfica also finished their group phase on a high, beating Bayern Munich 1-0 to clinch top spot in Group C. The Eagles are flying high with their unbeaten record in the tournament so far, and have finished their last two games with clean sheets.

Now the two teams face off in this intriguing clash to see who will progress to face either Palmeiras or Botafogo in the quarter-finals.

Benfica team news

Benfica will welcome back Alvaro Carreras and Andrea Belotti to the matchday squad after suspensions ruled them both out of the Bayern Munich clash. Carreras acquired a yellow card against both Boca Juniors and Auckland City; thus was suspended, and Belotti received a two-match suspension for his red card in the first group game against Boca.

Florentino missed the last two games after picking up an injury post the first match, and Renato Sanches had to be substituted against Bayern, which was noted as an injury. It is yet to be seen if both or either will be fit for the Chelsea game.

Chelsea team news

Chelsea will remain without striker Nicolas Jackson after the Senegal forward’s red card against Flamengo. The striker was sent off just four minutes after coming on as a late substitute for a studs-up challenge and was given an automatic one-match ban. This ban was upgraded by a FIFA disciplinary committee, which deemed the challenge as serious foul play. Jackson will therefore sit out this game but be available should Chelsea progress.

It is presumed that Liam Delap will continue playing as a striker, a role he may well have even if Jackson was eligible after the young Englishman scored his first goal for the club against Esperance Tunis. Apart from Jackson, manager Enzo Maresca has a full squad to choose from.

Head-to-Head record

In the Club World Cup, Chelsea have won two and lost one compared to Benfica, who won two but drew one. Both won their final group game, so they have momentum, making this an interesting clash.

The two have not met for some time in European competition either. The last time Chelsea and Benfica faced off was in the 2013 Europa League Final, a game Chelsea won 2-1 with a dramatic Branislav Ivanovic goal in the 93rd minute snatching victory.

They met two times before that, in the 2011/12 Champions League quarter-finals, where Chelsea progressed, winning the first leg 1-0 away, before finishing the job at Stamford Bridge 2-1.

Odds for Benfica v Chelsea
