BVB secure pole position
Club World Cup pundits were unsure what to make of Borussia Dortmund's chances of securing glory in the US this summer after watching them slip to a fourth-place finish in the German Bundesliga. They finished with 57 points on the board, 25 beyond runaway champions Bayern Munich and just two points inside the Champions League places. When toiling to an uneventful goalless draw with Brazilian team Fluminense in the opening game of Group F in East Rutherford, fans feared the worst, especially as debutant Jobe Bellingham failed to set the heather alight when coming off the bench.
Thankfully, better times were ahead for both Borussia Dortmund and Bellingham on matchday two. BVB edged South African champions the Mamelodi Sundowns in a seven-goal thriller at the TQL Stadium, Cincinnati, with the brother of former fans' favourite Jude Bellingham scoring his first goal for Dortmund. A 4-3 win was exciting, but Dortmund claimed the points more comfortably than the bare result suggests. A 1-0 victory over Ulsan HD was closer than expected, but the three points ensured Dortmund progressed as winners of the division.
With two wins in their last two games, we're backing Borussia Dortmund for a treble.
Tip: Borussia Dortmund win @ 4/5 (bet365)
Bet explanation: If Dortmund beats Monterrey in 90 minutes, you get the profits.
Rayados unbeaten in three
Monterrey started as one of the outsiders to do anything of note in the US in June, and most pundits predicted they'd be back in Mexico by July. That wasn't the case, and with the tournament delivering its fair share of shock results, the Liga MX club are still firing. They finished as runners-up in Group E behind Inter Milan, thanks to a win and two draws, collecting five points. That tally was one better than Argentina's River Plate, and five more than the Urawa Red Diamonds, who returned home empty-handed after three tries.
Monterrey opened their CWC25 account with an impressive 1-1 draw against Inter Milan in Pasadena, with 40,000 fans watching on. They built on that solid start when holding River Plate to a nervy goalless finish at the same venue with over 57,000 in attendance. Needing a win in their final match of three from the pool, Rayados delivered in style, hammering the Red Diamons 4-0 to cement a silver medal finish, with Inter Milan beating River Plate 2-0.
Having drawn two of their three games here, I expect Monterrey to keep it tight and aim to frustrate their big-name opponents. Back under 2.5 goals to land for the third time in four.
Tip: Under 2.5 goals @ 11/10 (bet365)
Bet explanation: You need this game to produce fewer than three goals to win your bet.
Pick a solid showing from Dortmund
With the stats leading us to our two previous picks in this match, I'll continue on that train of thought and back Borussia Dortmund to win to nil. The Bundesliga giants are experienced enough to know big games are won off a solid defence. We'll overlook the crazy match against Sundowns, focusing on BVB's clean sheets against Fluminense and South Korean representatives Ulsan HD. The odds offered allow us to follow this pick as a single.
To add confidence to our bet, we remember Dortmund won without conceding last time and passed up some glorious chances to do the same against Fluminense. Monterrey scored five goals in the previous phase, but we know four of those goals came in their final match against an opponent that was already out and finished bottom of the pool without a point, having conceded nine goals.
Dortmund must be organised, patient and disciplined. They'll stand strong against an underdog, believing they have nothing to lose, aiming to hurt them on the counter.
Tip: Dortmund win to nil @ 12/5 (bet365)
Bet explanation: If Dortmund wins the game and Monterrey fails to score, you get the profits.
