The Club World Cup 2025 is inching closer and closer to the final, but before we get there, we need to whittle down the teams, and only one of Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey will make it to the quarter-finals.

The two play each other in the final game of the last-16, both coming in unbeaten from the group stages. Despite being unbeaten, Dortmund have yet to set the tournament alight; however, they have been efficient in what they have needed to do and will believe they can be dark horses in this tournament.

Monterrey came through a tough group and will believe they can dance with the best, being unbeaten against both Inter Milan and River Plate. This will be the first time the Mexican team will play a German club, knowing they could pull off an upset against Dortmund.

Borussia Dortmund team news

Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens has missed the last game of the Club World Cup and will miss many future Dortmund games if the reports are true. According to media outlets, the young Englishman has completed the main part of his medical at Chelsea ahead of a reported transfer fee close to £55 million.

Having been in the squad list for Dortmund at this tournament, Gittens will not be eligible to play for the Blues in the tournament as per FIFA regulations. He will instead have to wait until the team return for pre-season training.

The 20-year-old will be the only player that Dortmund can’t call on from their Club World Cup squad and head into the Monterrey match. Julian Brandt broke a bone in his wrist against Fluminense, but did make a substitute appearance against Ulsan, so he is fit enough to continue in the tournament.

Monterrey team news

Midfielder Jorge Rodriguez returns for the team after being suspended in the final group game against Urawa Reds. Goals were a problem for Monterrey before the Urawa game, too; however, the four they got should imbue them with confidence that they can score again.

Big names Lucas Ocampos and Sergio Canales sat out that win, and they may face a similar fate against Dortmund if the coach, Domenec Torrent, decides to stick with the team that produced Monterrey’s only win of the tournament so far.

Head-to-Head record

Dortmund are through to the knockout stages, and that is at least the first job done. The team are unbeaten in the Club World Cup but has not shown the best of themselves so far. They started with a draw against Fluminense and then managed to get past both Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan Hyundai. The team are unbeaten in their last 10 games since the defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League and will believe they can continue that here.

Monterrey have had an indifferent vein of form in their last 10. They have won five games in that run, but have not won more than two games in succession. Domenec Torrent only took over before the Club World Cup and is still working out how to get his team reading from his hymn sheet.

The two teams have never met before, making this the maiden fixture.
