Bayern Munich sealed their place in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) after a late strike from Michael Olise helped the Bavarians to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over CA Boca Juniors in Florida.

Having recorded the biggest margin of victory in CWC history against Auckland City in their Group C opener, Bayern looked full of confidence early on at the Hard Rock Stadium.

The Bavarians thought they’d taken an eighth-minute lead when Michael Olise’s corner drifted beyond everyone in the box and into the far corner, but VAR intervened to rule that Serge Gnabry had impeded Boca keeper Agustín Marchesín.

Undeterred, Vincent Kompany’s side didn’t have to wait long before they deservedly broke the deadlock, as Harry Kane pounced on a loose ball in the area to finish coolly from 12 yards.

Bayern should’ve doubled their advantage shortly after, only for Kingsley Coman to inexplicably miss the target from point-blank range after good work by Gnabry.

Chances continued to flow with HT approaching, as Kevin Zenón saw a powerful strike repelled by Manuel Neuer, while at the other end, Kane curled a free-kick onto the roof of the net.

Having failed to win any of their last five matches inside 90 minutes (D3, L2), Boca knew a positive start to the second period was imperative.

Miguel Ángel Russo’s men remained industrious with Bayern continuing to dominate possession, and their patience was duly rewarded in the 66th minute via a moment of individual brilliance.

Alan Velasco threaded a clever ball into the path of a marauding Miguel Merentiel, and the Uruguayan took one touch to beat Josip Stanišić before sweeping a sublime finish beyond Neuer to restore parity.

That set up a fascinating final 20 minutes in Florida as both sides went in pursuit of the game’s all-important third goal.

Bayern’s superior quality ultimately proved decisive with seven minutes remaining when Kane’s lay-off in the box was clinically converted by Olise for the Frenchman’s third goal of the tournament.

Despite their best efforts, there was no second equaliser for Boca, as Komany’s side eased through the closing stages to extend their unbeaten run across all competitions to nine games (W6, D3).
